While Ariel Helwani reported that the UFC is planning to book “El Matador” against Islam Makhachev, possibly as early as International Fight Week, UFC CEO Dana White hasn’t publicly committed to the matchup.

Alex Pereira has lost the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship, and one UFC veteran has a theory on what went wrong. Pereira was challenged by Magomed Ankalaev in the main event of UFC 313 this past Saturday. Fans were surprised to see Ankalaev force Pereira to back up early on. Ankalaev even had “Poatan” stumbling back into the cage off a punch at the end of round two. Ankalaev looked to be the aggressor throughout the fight, and he was awarded the unanimous decision win and UFC gold.

Pereira looked to have his fourth successful defense of the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. Standing in his way was Ankalaev, who entered with just one pro MMA loss on his resume. “Poatan” never truly felt comfortable fighting off his back foot. Ankalaev gave Pereira good reason to move backwards, as he rocked him with a huge punch at the end of round two.

While “The Highlight” was preparing to slug it out with Dan Hooker, a hand injury forced “The Hangman” off the card. Taking his place was Rafael Fiziev, a man Gaethje was familiar with. Gaethje defeated Fiziev in their first encounter via majority decision back in 2023.

As UFC 313 approached, many were wondering if UFC Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones would forgo a title unification bout against interim titleholder Tom Aspinall in favor of a showdown with “Poatan.” Pereira ended up losing the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship to Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 313, putting a halt to that idea.

Ignacio Bahamondes feels gutted following Jalin Turner’s retirement announcement. Bahamondes shared the Octagon with Turner on the main card of UFC 313 this past Saturday. Turner was trapped in a triangle choke and he tapped out in the opening frame. After the fight, Turner told media members at Octagon side that he has decided to retire. He told John Morgan that he first considered retirement when he was stopped by Renato Moicano at UFC 300.

Don’t expect Justin Gaethje to be Dustin Poirier’s retirement fight. Gaethje was ready to throw leather with Dan Hooker at UFC 313 this past Saturday, but Hooker’s hand injury forced him out of action. Rafael Fiziev stepped up in an effort to avenge his 2023 loss to “The Highlight.” This was another fun fight between the two, and it went the distance just as their first encounter did. Gaethje took a unanimous decision this time, and both men once again nabbed “Fight of the Night” honors.

The Octagon moved to T-Mobile Arena for tonight’s UFC 313 pay-per-view event, and four fighters wound up taking home performance bonuses. The fight card was headlined by a light heavyweight title bout featuring Alex Pereira taking on Magomed Ankalaev. The highly anticipated main event resulted in a tightly contested back and forth affair. Alex Pereira got off to a strong start, but Magomed Ankalaev became more and more confident as the fight went on and ended up rocking ‘Poatan’ in the final seconds of the second round. While Pereira was able to keep things competitive and avoid being taken down, the constant pressure and aggression of the challenger proved to be the difference and he walked away with a unanimous decision win.

Tonight’s UFC 313 event was headlined by a light heavyweight title fight featuring Alex Pereira taking on Magomed Ankalaev. Pereira (12-3 MMA) was returing to action for the first time since scoring a fourth-round TKO victory over Khalil Rountree Jr. at October’s UFC 307 event (see that here). That victory had marked ‘Poatan’s’ third defense of the 205lbs title, as he had previously defeated Jiri Prochazka (x2) and Jamahal Hill.
