Garry looked sharp for most of the fight, but he had to overcome a late scare to take the unanimous decision victory.

Zhang Mingyang was his dance partner, and the fight didn’t make it out of the opening frame. Mingyang delivered some sharp elbows that split the top of Smith’s head. He then rained down strikes on the ground before referee Jason Herzog stopped the fight.

Prates was going to take on Geoff Neal at UFC 314, but Neal was pulled due to an injury. Garry outmatched Prates on the feet until the fourth round, where the Fighting Nerds standout was coming alive. Prates even dropped Garry in the fifth round and nearly secured a finish, but it was too late.

Last night, Carlos Prates fell short in his attempt to overcome Ian Machado Garry. While he did take the fight on short notice, it seemed as if there was a notable gulf between the two in terms of strategy, game planning and overall execution. With that being said, Carlos did manage to significantly hurt Ian in the fifth and final round – but he wasn’t quite able to get him out of there.

With that being said, Prates had a handful of big moments – including in the final minute of the fight where it looked like he was going to get the Irishman out of there.

The highly anticipated welterweight main event proved to be another impressive performance for Ian Machado Garry. ‘The Future’ was able to use his Fight IQ and impressive footwork and striking to get the better of Carlos Prates throughout the majority of the opening four rounds. Then, in the fifth and final frame, ‘The Nightmare’ finally got off some good shots and appeared to be on the verge of scoring a finish. Somehow, Garry survived the late onslaught and went on to emerge victorious on all three of the judges’ scorecards.

Smith (38-22 MMA) was competing for the final time this evening in Missouri. ‘Lionheart’ entered his retirement fight with hopes of snapping a two-fight losing skid. The 36-year-old was most previously knocked out by Dominick Reyes at UFC 310, which was preceded by a unanimous decision loss to Roman Dolidze in June of last year.
