UFC champion Tom Aspinall is teasing some huge news, and it doesn’t sound like we’ll have to wait long for it. England’s Aspinall is the current UFC interim heavyweight champion. He won the belt with an impressive knockout of Sergei Spivac in late 2023, and defended it for the first time with a quick stop of Curtis Blaydes last summer.

UFC heavyweight contender Alexander Volkov is frustrated with Jon Jones for holding up the division. Jones won the vacant UFC heavyweight title in March of 2023 when he beat Ciryl Gane by submission. He ended up defending his belt in November of 2024 when he TKO’d Stipe Miocic. Since then, however, he has been on the sidelines with no fight being booked, leaving interim champ Tom Aspinall waiting.

While Dana White has insisted that reigning titleholder Jon Jones and Aspinall will fight, there appears to be no signs of any movement towards making the bout happen.

Jones is best known for a legendary run in the UFC light heavyweight division, where he cemented himself as one of the best fighters ever over the course of multiple title reigns. However, he ultimately vacated the division’s belt to move up to heavyweight.

Jones is currently in Thailand filming a Russian reality television show with fellow UFC star Nate Diaz. In a recent clip from the show, Jones could be heard saying Makhachev is “new in the sport still.”

Many fans were hoping Jones vs Aspinall would headline the International Fight Week on June 29 in Las Vegas, but that won’t happen as White announced the main event would be Ilia Topuria vs Charles Oliveira.

The UFC has parted ways with two more fighters, including a long-time training partner of heavyweight champion Jon Jones. That would be heavyweight Don’Tale Mayes, who spent about five years with the Las Vegas-based MMA promotion. Croatian flyweight Ivana Petrovic was also cut from the UFC roster.

He claimed the vacant belt in 2023, soon after Francis Ngannou vacated the title, with a quick submission of Ciryl Gane. Unfortunately, Jones has been incredibly choosy with his fights since then. He has fought just once since winning the title, battering a shopworn Stipe Miocic to a third-round TKO win last fall.
