For the most part, it’s worked, even though he hasn’t quite been able to claim the undisputed world title.

In the main event of UFC 302, Dustin Poirier faced Islam Makhachev and gave the champion all he could handle. However, in round five, the Russian scored a takedown and quickly earned a submission win. In the process, denying Poirier of the lightweight title that he’s long sought.

That bout ended a long hiatus for Colby Covington, and he was largely dominated. Post-fight, the welterweight revealed a foot injury that hindered his performance. Now healthy, Covington has chosen to remain on the sidelines, rather than fighting the likes of Ian Garry.

Covington and Poirier used to train at American Top Team, but ‘Chaos’ left the gym due to him no longer getting along with a couple of fighters. One fighter he didn’t get along with was Poirier who told Covington it was on-sight if he saw him. Many fans hoped that meant the two would fight in the Octagon, but Poirier has made it clear he doesn’t want to fight Covington and give him that attention.

He will challenge Leon Edwards for the UFC welterweight championship, in what promises to be an electric collision between the two rivals. Of course, Edwards is seen as the favorite by many, but Muhammad appears to be feeling pretty confident in himself.

Next month in Abu Dhabi, Nick Diaz will face longtime welterweight contender Vicente Luque. However, the 40-year-old reportedly didn’t want to fight ‘The Silent Assassin’ at first. Instead, Diaz had a list of other opponents he wanted.

He’s made a career, at least in the last few years, out of letting the world know what he thinks. Some people believe it’s an act, whereas others just think that’s who he is. Either way, he’s annoyed a lot of people, and his latest frustration has been in relation to UFC fighter pay.
