The Octagon remained in Nevada for today’s UFC Vegas 49 event, an eleven-bout fight card headlined by Islam Makhachev vs. Bobby Green. The highly anticipated 160lbs catchweight contest proved to be the one-sided affair that many fans and pundits were expecting. Islam Makhachev was able to get the fight to the floor early in the opening frame and quickly proceeded to move to mount. From there, the Russian unloaded a plethora of ground and pound which forced the referee to step in and call off the contest.

Anthony Smith does not believe that former UFC champion Luke Rockhold has the ability to beat anyone worth a f**k. Rockhold has not fought since UFC 239 where he suffered a KO loss to Jan Blachowicz in his light heavyweight debut. Colby Covington is set to face Jorge Masvidal next week at UFC 272. However, it seems the former interim welterweight champion has other opponents he wants afterward. ‘Chaos’ has notably said that he would like to fight Kamaru Usman if he beats ‘Gamebred’ next week. Covington would like a trilogy fight against his Nigerian foe despite the fact that he’s down 0-2 in the series. The fight does remain a possibility though, as his performance in both bouts earned praise.

Bellator 275’s main event saw Gegard Mousasi take on top contender Austin Vanderford. The Dutch fighter looked to make the second straight defense of his middleweight crown. Both men came into the fight riding waves of momentum. The champion Gegard Mousasi (49-7-2) was coming off a third-round TKO of John Salter in August 2021. He won the belt for the second time in October 2020, by outpointing former welterweight champion Douglas Lima.

Brian Kelleher has announced that he’s going to walk out with the flag of Ukraine for his next fight. Earlier this week, Russia invaded Ukraine and sparked protests and outrage across the entire international community. ‘Boom Boom’ is set to face Umar Nurmagomedov next week at UFC 272. The buildup to the fight has been quite entertaining, as both have talked trash on social media. Kelleher has even asked Conor McGregor to corner him in his fight against Nurmagomedov. A nod to ‘The Notorious’ rivalry with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Shogun Rua has been out of action since November 2020, a loss to Paul Craig. Following the fight, Dana White revealed that the Brazilian had retired, but that seems to be no more. Shogun Rua announced in the months after his loss to Craig that he was looking at two more bouts, but nothing was made official. It seems that the legend’s Penultimate fight has been revealed. He is reportedly going to be facing off against Ovince St. Preux at UFC 274 in May.

Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington did a joint interview with Stephen A. Smith and to no surprise, it got heated. Masvidal and Covington are set to headline UFC 272 on March 5 in Las Vegas. It’s a highly-anticipated bout due to them being former roommates and best friends but now hate one another. Part of the reason they started to not get along is due to the fact Covington allegedly didn’t pay a coach at American Top Team after his interim title fight win over Rafael dos Anjos.

Kyle Daukaus is glad to put the Kevin Holland controversy behind him now that he’s picked up another win. In the co-main event of UFC Vegas 48, Daukaus submitted Jamie Pickett in the first round. Kyle dominated the fight from start to finish and it’s a performance he is happy with.
