Tragedy has befallen the family of former UFC champion Jon Jones. On Friday evening, it was announced that Jones’ brother Arthur — a Super Bowl champion — has died. He was 39. His cause of death was not revealed. “We are terribly saddened to learn of Arthur Jones’ sudden passing,“ NFL General Manager Eric DeCosta, wrote in a public statement. ”Arthur’s presence was a gift to everyone he encountered. His big, bright smile, infectious energy and eternal positivity created a presence that continuously uplifted others.

Jones left the heavyweight division in a lurch with his noncommitment to a title unification bout against Tom Aspinall. Aspinall had been the interim UFC Heavyweight Champion since Nov. 2023, but “Bones” continued to tease both going through with the fight and retiring. White claimed that Jones initially agreed to the fight, but walked it back by retiring.

Jones, who announced his fighting retirement in June, was accused of fleeing the scene of a car accident near his home in Albuquerque. He was set to appear in court on Tuesday, before misdemeanor charges stemming from the incident were dropped.

Jones was set to appear in court for a bench trial on Tuesday, but a Nolle Prosequi was filed by the state of New Mexico this past Friday.

A lot of fans, pundits and critics felt as if he was clearly ducking the Englishman, but regardless of the circumstances behind it, the bout never came to fruition after Jon opted to retire from mixed martial arts.
