UFC welterweight contenders Stephen Thompson and Michel Pereira have now been removed from tomorrow’s event. The fight between the two was slated to be the biggest of the Brazilian’s career to date. Entering UFC 291, Michel Pereira was riding a five-fight winning streak. With victories over names such as Santiago Ponzibbio and Niko Price in that stretch, Saturday’s fight with Stephen Thompson was a big one.

The promotion ended up settling on Val Woodburn, but Michael Chiesa claims he had previously spoke to the UFC about stepping up on short notice to fight Nickal and the making a quick turnaround to compete this weekend against Holland.

The September 23 Fight Night card is expected to take place at the UFC Apex and Dana White told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto that the main event will see Rafael Fiziev take on Mateusz Gamrot at lightweight. The co-main event is a battle of ranked featherweights as Bryce Mitchell will throw down with Dan Ige.
