Ferguson was supposed to take on Li Jingliang at UFC 279 at welterweight, but after Khamzat Chimaev badly missed weight, ‘El Cucuy’ ended up fighting Nate Diaz at welterweight on a day’s notice. However, Ferguson says that camp was not a good one as he was eating slushies on fight week and didn’t care too much about his fight against Diaz.

There, the former title challenger suffered his third loss in a row by knockout. Previously, Derrick Lewis suffered lopsided losses at the hands of Sergei Pavlovich and Ciryl Gane in 2022.

There, he scored a first-round knockout win, in his first fight in a year. Following the victory, Tom Aspinall took to the microphone to call for the winner of Ciryl Gane vs. Sergey Spivac, going down in France later this year.

After UFC 290, it seemed pretty nailed on that Dricus du Plessis would face Israel Adesanya for the belt later this year. Unfortunately, with the South African not being available, it was then suggested that Sean Strickland would get the call. He made it clear from the word go that he’d need to receive a big payday in order to say yes, especially with there being less than two months to go until fight night.
