The original plan was for Adesanya to defend his middleweight title at UFC 293 in Australia against the winner of Dricus Du Plessis vs. Robert Whittaker. ‘DDP’ ended up winning by TKO, but he suffered a foot injury, and couldn’t fight on that date.

Strickland stepped up after Dricus du Plessis wasn’t going to be healed in time to fight Adesanya at the event.

At UFC 290, Du Plessis was fighting Robert Whittaker in a title-eliminator fight with the winner set to face Adesanya next. Ultimately, it was Dricus Du Plessis who won by second-round TKO in a phenomenal performance. After the win, Adesanya and Du Plessis had a faceoff and all signs pointed to the two fighting in Australia in September.

Strickland entered the fight coming off a decision victory over Nassourdine Imavov, in a scrap he took on short notice. That fight got him back into the win column after suffering back-to-back losses to Jared Cannonier and Alex Pereira. Magomedov, meanwhile, was coming off a 19-second KO win over Dustin Stoltzfus in his UFC debut to earn a main event spot.

He took on unranked middleweight Abus Magomedov in the main event of UFC Vegas 76. Strickland won the fight via second-round TKO. It’s his second straight win, which is much needed, as Strickland had dropped back to back fights against Alex Pereira and Jared Cannonier.
