Pros react to Kevin Lee finishing Gregor Gillespie at UFC 244

Tonight during the stacked main event of UFC 244, Kevin Lee collided with Gregor Gillespie in a lightweight bout. Kevin ‘The Motown Phenom’ had moved back to the lightweight division after losing to UFC legend, Rafael Dos Anjos in a welterweight matchup in May 2019. His last fight prior was against Al Iaquinta. Their first face-off was during Lee’s UFC debut five years ago. Iaquinta defeated his opponent by unanimous decision at UFC 169. Much to the dismay of ‘The Motown Phenom’, their rematch in 2018 offered the same outcome: a unanimous decision loss.

In his most recent effort at March’s UFC 235 event in Las Vegas, the Brazilian scored a 36-second knockout victory over Misha Cirkunov.

UFC president Dana White is looking for the next opponent for Israel Adesanya, and it looks like Yoel Romero may be the frontrunner to take that spot. With Paulo Costa injured and out of action until mid-2020 with a biceps injury, the UFC needs to find someone else for Adesanya to fight. The new UFC middleweight champion has been going back-and-forth on social media with Romero, and it looks like the trash talk has drawn the intrigue of White, who appears to be interested in booking the fight.

Eddie Alvarez has found himself a new apprentice. The former UFC champion is going to teach his MMA skills to basketball star Ben Simmons, following the crazy NBA brawl. Philadelphia 76er, Joel Embiid went head-to-head with Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns during a basketball match. As the fight ensured, fellow basketball players, rallied around the bust-up including Ben Simmons. The 76er point guard administered a rear-naked choke to Towns, forcing him to ‘tap out’. The BMF belt — the prize that will be awarded to the winner of the UFC 244 main event battle between Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal — has finally been revealed. This unique piece of UFC paraphernalia was unveiled by a glove-wearing UFC President Dana White on Friday in New York City. As yesterday’s teaser revealed, it’s silver and black in color, and inscribed with the letters “BMF”. It also features the year in Roman numerals, the venue (Madison Square Garden), and White’s signature somewhere on the back.

Kelvin Gastelum made weight for his UFC 244 showdown with Darren Till, but his steps onto the scale Friday morning were not without controversy. As Gastelum took to the scale and stripped down to his birthday suit — evidence of a tough cut — he appeared to lean on his coach, which would of course have an effect on how much weight he’s putting on the scale, and the number the scale displays.
