On Saturday night, former UFC title challenger John Moraga suffered a TKO loss to Marc Castro on the Canelo Alvarez boxing undercard. Moraga, a former UFC fighter, took on Castro in a short-notice boxing match on the undercard of the Alvarez card. Moraga fared poorly in the fight right from the opening bell, as he was dropped by a jab just seven seconds into the fight. Although Moraga managed to get back to his feet, he was dropped two more times in the second round, and eventually, the referee was forced to stop the fight. Alvarez just defeated Callum Smith by a decision on December 19 in a lopsided super middleweight title fight. Although that fight went the 12-round distance, Alvarez didn’t take much if any damage against Smith and so he’s able to get back in the ring fairly quickly in 2021. After taking a few weeks off to spend time with his family for Christmas, Alvarez will get back in camp soon for a fight just two months away.

Pound-for-pound boxing great Canelo Alvarez issued a statement after beating Callum Smith, announcing to the sports world that “I’m back!” Alvarez moved up to the super middleweight division in this bout to take on Smith. Alvarez gave up six inches of height in the contest (5’9″ to 6’3″) and he also gave up a significant reach advantage, but none of those physical advantages for Smith mattered as Alvarez boxed him up for nearly the full 12 rounds. At the end of 36 minutes of boxing action, Alvarez won a unanimous decision (119-109, 119-109, 117-111). The lopsided win over Smith won Alvarez the WBC and WBA super-middleweight titles.

Golovkin, one of the top-10 ranked pound-for-pound boxers in the world, took on Szeremeta at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. As expected, Golovkin put on a spectacular performance against an overmatched opponent. Golovkin scored four knockdowns en route to the referee stopping the fight due to TKO. With the win, Golovkin improved his professional boxing record to 41-1-1.

Canelo, a four-division champion and one of the greatest boxers competing today, has recently been embroiled in a legal battle with Golden Boy Promotions and the streaming service DAZN, with whom he signed a record-shattering $350M deal in 2018. The lawsuit, launched in a Los Angeles Federal Court, alleges Canelo’s multi-fight deal with GBP and DAZN was breached to the tune of $280 million in damages after they failed to find him a fight since he beat Sergey Kovalev in late 2019.

Some exciting news from the boxing world: According to a report from Lance Pugmire of The Athletic, Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin “have verbally agreed on financial terms to stage their trilogy fight.” According to The Athletic’s report, Canelo still intends to battle Billy Joe Saunders in a super middleweight unification bout in his next fight. The showdown with Golovkin is expected to follow thereafter, most likely on September 12 at AT&T Stadium outside Dallas, Texas.
