UFC bantamweight contender Sean O’Malley was surprised by Marlon Vera’s performance over the weekend. ‘Chito’ returned to the octagon in the main event of UFC San Antonio on Saturday. Heading into the contest, Vera was riding a four-fight winning streak with knockout wins over names such as Frankie Edgar and Dominick Cruz in that stretch. Sadly for the bantamweight contender, that streak ended over the weekend.

In the main event of UFC San Antonio, a battle of top-five bantamweights went down as Cory Sandhagen took on Marlon Vera. Sandhagen was coming off a TKO doctor stoppage win over Song Yadong back in September, this after losing back-to-back fights to Petr Yan for the interim belt and a controversial split decision loss to TJ Dillashaw. Vera, meanwhile, was riding a four-fight winning streak and was coming off a KO win over Dominick Cruz.

This was a big opportunity for “Chito,” but he ultimately fell short in the five-round affair, dropping a split decision. Most agree that the 48-47 score in favor of Vera was baffling, and Sandhagen should’ve won the fight on all three judges’ scoresheet. Nonetheless, the right man had his hand raised.

The Octagon returned to Texas for tonight’s UFC San Antonio event, an eleven-bout fight card headlined by Marlon Vera vs. Cory Sandhagen. Tonight’s highly anticipated bantamweight fight proved to be a dominant showing for Cory Sandhagen (this despite one judge awarding the fight to Marlon Vera). ‘The Sandman’ was able to get the better of ‘Chito’ in the ground game in rounds one and two and then cleaned up in the standup in rounds three and four. While round five was definitely close, there was no reason to believe that Vera had done enough to win the fight. Thankfully for Sandhagen, two judges got it right and he was awarded the split decision win.
