Marlon Moraes ends retirement, set to sign with PFL

Marlon Moraes will be ending his retirement less than six months after announcing it. In April, Moraes announced he was retiring from MMA following a KO loss to Song Yadong back in March. It was his fourth straight loss and in March, he released a statement through his manager that he would be retiring from MMA.

Former UFC title challenger Marlon Moraes has announced his retirement from MMA. ‘Magic’ is currently riding a four-fight losing streak, with several being lopsided knockout losses. His last appearance in the cage was against Song Yadong last month, ending in a first-round stoppage. Following the fight, Moraes took his gloves off in the cage, leading many to speculate that his career was over.

It wasn’t long ago that Moraes was the No. 1 contender in the UFC bantamweight division. But after losing back-to-back fights by knockout to Cory Sandhagen and Rob Font to end 2020, he’s now fallen all the way down to No. 7 in the UFC. Remember, Moraes was set to fight UFC bantamweight champion Petr Yan at one point in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. So the fact that Moraes has now dropped all the way out of the title conversation at 135lbs is downright shocking.

The loss will drop Moraes in the rankings behind Sandhagen and Aljamain Sterling and it puts him further from a fight against UFC bantamweight champion Pet Yan.

Combate reports that contracts aren’t signed yet but this is the fight the UFC wants to book.

UFC bantamweight contender Marlon Moraes believes he knows why UFC president Dana White hasn’t given Aljamain Sterling a title shot at 135lbs yet. Sterling tapped out Cory Sandhagen in the first round of their bout at UFC 250 which was supposed to be a No. 1 contender fight in the UFC bantamweight division. After Petr Yan defeated Jose Aldo at UFC 251 to win the vacant UFC bantamweight belt, fans and media naturally assumed that Sterling would be next in line for the title. However, White has been non-committal towards giving Sterling the title shot just yet. Moraes believes he knows why.
