Chael Sonnen wasn’t expecting Nate Diaz to call out Jorge Masvidal. Diaz felt making a challenge to “Gamebred” was the right call after besting Anthony Pettis in a three-round affair. It was Diaz’s first bout since Aug. 2016 and his first victory since March of that year. Despite the inactivity, the Stockton native’s popularity certainly hasn’t taken a hit as over 17,000 fans packed the Honda Center this past Saturday night (Aug. 17) for UFC 241.

He stepped inside the Octagon for the first time since Aug. 2016 in the co-main event of UFC 241. Diaz took on Anthony Pettis in a bout that went the distance. The Stockton native simply overwhelmed Pettis in the second and third rounds to take a unanimous decision victory.

Following the win, Diaz called for a fight with Masvidal for the, hopefully, soon-to-be made “baddest motherf****r in the game” belt.

Diaz is scheduled to take on Anthony Pettis this Saturday night (Aug. 17) in the co-main event of UFC 241. This will be Diaz’s first bout since Aug. 2016, where he dropped a majority decision in a rematch with Conor McGregor. Even if Diaz emerges victorious this weekend, Bisping believes there’s a roadblock to the Stockton native colliding with Jorge Masvidal.

He’ll reportedly be offered a fight imminently — but not with McGregor.

Thompson gave his take on the welterweight title situation in a recent interview with MMA Fighting. “Leon Edwards is on an 8 fight winning streak, wow,” he said. “So he could possibly be fighting for the title. I know everyone’s talking Masvidal, but he’s had two wins and his third loss was me at MSG. I think there are other people more deserving of the title, but he’s put on some good shows and knocked out some good people so you never know.”
