Claressa Shields is looking to make a lot of history in 2020 — in the boxing ring, and in the world of mixed martial arts. Shields has the opportunity to become a three-division world boxing champion and do so faster than any fighter in history when she faces Ivana Habazin on Jan. 10 for the vacant WBC and WBO 154-pound titles. The event will take place at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, N.J. and will air on Showtime.

The sports streaming service DAZN is now home to Bellator MMA, Combate Americas, and boxing action featuring superstars like Canelo Alvarez and Anthony Joshua. Fans can access all of that combat sports content for $19.99 a month, or $99.99 for an annual membership. Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn would like to see that rate increase — by a lot. Hearn, who promotes Anthony Joshua, has witnessed DAZN’s recent growth, and believes the service is becoming a must-have for fight fans, particularly those that follow boxing.

Evander Holyfield recently sent some encouragement to his former training partner Andy Ruiz Jr. Ruiz famously delivered the first loss of Anthony Joshua’s professional career to become the new unified heavyweight champ early in 2019. He beat the British fighter by technical knockout in the seventh round of their June bout, claiming the WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO titles in the process.

Heavyweight boxing star Tyson Fury has confirmed that he will soon be heading to Dublin to train MMA with UFC superstar Conor McGregor. Fury is one of the best heavyweight boxers on the planet but in recent months has teased a future move to mixed martial arts. Fury has been training his MMA skills recently with UFC middleweight star Darren Till. UFC president Dana White has also admitted he’s interested in seeing Fury in the Octagon one day.

Boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez says that he is open to competing in a boxing match against UFC welterweight contender Jorge Masvidal. Masvidal recently said that he is open to a boxing superfight against Floyd Mayweather, but a boxing match against Alvarez would arguably be just as big.

The heavyweight boxing title fight rematch we all want to see is now officially set for February 22, 2020, as Deontay Wilder battles rival Tyson Fury. The event will take place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. ESPN’s Dan Rafael confirmed the date, venue, and location of the bout.

As 2019 winds down, Dana White is starting to push steam behind Zuffa Boxing, although no set announcements have been made yet. Most recently, White announced that he had reached a deal with Floyd Mayweather for the two to work together on Zuffa Boxing, but White would not go into detail as to how that deal would take place. Following the news of their agreement, another boxing legend wants in on Zuffa Boxing. While making an appearance for Sirius XM’s Fight Nation’s Defining Moments of the Decade Show, former heavyweight boxing legend Evander Holyfield revealed he would like to work with Dana White and be a part of Zuffa Boxing.

After a backstage altercation with Petr Yan at UFC 245, however, he’s already itching to settle his differences with the Russian in the cage thereafter. Responding to a fan on Twitter, Garbrandt welcomed a future fight with Yan — even on Yan’s home turf.

Andy Ruiz Jr released a new statement following his loss to Anthony Joshua during their rematch earlier this month. In this statement, the former champion vowed to vindicate his loss and reclaim the WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO titles in a trilogy bout. The Mexican fighter first fought Anthony Joshua in June 2019 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Ruiz Jr accomplished a shocking TKO victory in the seventh round over the formerly undefeated fighter.

There’s recently been renewed discussion about a potential MMA showdown between two-division UFC champion Amanda Nunes and boxing champion Claressa Shields — thanks in large part to the comments of Dana White. “Claressa Shields is coming [to UFC 245],” White told BT Sport ahead of Nunes’ Saturday night bantamweight title fight with challenger Germaine de Randamie (via MMA Fighting). “She’ll be here Saturday to watch the fight. She’s coming to watch the fight, and I will be honest with you, Claressa Shields’ people and I have talked. I don’t know, we’ll see. We’ve talked.

Bryce Mitchell is the latest MMA fighter to call out Floyd Mayweather. Yet, the Arkansas native says his issue with the boxer happened 10 years ago and he wants to fight him for it. Bryce Mitchell also says he’ll hit Mayweather so hard he’ll finally be able to read. Of course, Conor McGregor joked that the boxer couldn’t read in the lead up to their fight.

Diego Sanchez’s last fight saw him use one cornerman with little to no martial arts experience. Now, the UFC veteran is hoping to add a boxing legend to his corner. Sanchez will return to the Octagon on Feb. 15 at UFC Rio Rancho when he takes on Michel Pereira. If the 37-year-old has his way, former boxing heavyweight champion, Mike Tyson will be in his corner for that fight.

Andy Ruiz Jr. blames months of “partying” and not training enough as the reason why he lost to Anthony Joshua during their rematch in Saudi Arabia over the weekend. On Saturday, the former unified heavyweight champion attempted to defend his titles in a rematch against Joshua. They first met in the ring six months ago, when Ruiz Jr won by technical knockout in the seventh round. However, the Mexican didn’t have the same success the second time around, as he was comprehensively out-pointed during their rematch.

Ruiz Jr. had scored a shocking upset of the previously undefeated Joshua in the pairs first encounter in New York, emerging victorious by way of seventh-round TKO.
