Former UFC champion Conor McGregor saw some of himself in Sean O’Malley on Saturday. ‘Sugar’ returned to the cage for the first title shot of his career over the weekend at UFC 292. In the main event of the pay-per-view, Sean O’Malley faced longtime bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling. ‘Funk Master’ was coming off a win over Henry Cejudo in May, setting a record for title defenses in the division’s history.

Volkanovski was paying close attention to the UFC 292 main event, as Aljamain Sterling had said if he beat Sean O’Malley he was going to call out Volkanovski and fight for the featherweight title. It appeared the featherweight champ was interested in the fight, but Sterling suffered a second-round TKO loss to O’Malley to lose his belt.

Tony Ferguson has shut down talk of retirement. After Ferguson suffered a submission loss to Bobby Green at UFC 291, many called for ‘El Cucuy’ to retire given it was his sixth straight loss. Legendary boxing trainer Teddy Atlas thinks he knows what went wrong for Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292. Sterling put the UFC Bantamweight Championship at stake inside the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts on August 19. Standing across the Octagon from him was Sean O’Malley. After a very patient opening round, O’Malley found his counter punch within the first minute of the second stanza. O’Malley cracked Sterling with a right hand and sent him to the canvas. O’Malley picked his shots on the ground carefully and the fight was stopped.

Ian Garry has given an explanation on why he called out Stephen Thompson following his UFC 292 bout. Garry collided with Neil Magny on the main card of UFC 292 this past Saturday. This was a striking clinic in favor of “The Future.” Garry battered Magny’s lead leg with kicks and had him hobbling throughout the fight. While he didn’t score a finish, Garry did take a dominant unanimous decision win over Magny.

Sean O’Malley doesn’t see himself fighting Aljamain Sterling again in his first title defense. O’Malley challenged Sterling for the UFC Bantamweight Championship in the main event of UFC 292. O’Malley was patient before cracking Sterling with a counter right hand that dropped him in the second stanza. After some ground-and-pound, referee Marc Goddard had seen enough.

UFC President Dana White would rather not see Chris Weidman return to the Octagon. Weidman competed at UFC 292 after being out of action since 2021 due to a gruesome leg injury. The former UFC Middleweight Champion went one-on-one with Brad Tavares in the featured UFC 292 preliminary bout. While Chris Weidman had his moments, his lead leg took a pounding from the kicks of Tavares. The bout went the distance and Tavares was awarded the unanimous decision win.

Prior to that, the 28-year-old had gone toe-to-toe with Pedro Munhoz in a bout that was ultimately ruled a no-contest due to an accidental eye poke.

The highly anticipated bantamweight title fight resulted in a second-round TKO victory for Sean O’Malley. ‘Suga’ was able to keep the fight standing as long as it lasted and was able to connect with his heavy right hand early in the second round. That shot sent ‘Funkmaster’ crashing to the canvas, and O’Malley promptly finished the fight by landing some big ground and pound.
