Former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler says he is looking forward to an “exciting” rematch against his rival Nick Diaz at UFC 266. Lawler and Diaz meet in a five-round welterweight bout that takes place at UFC 266 on September 25. The two previously met back at UFC 47 in 2004, with Diaz KOing Lawler. It’s nearly 20 years later now and Lawler is the one who became the UFC champion, while Diaz has been out of the Octagon for the past decade. But despite Diaz not having fought since October 2011, it isn’t stopping fight fans from being really excited for this rematch.

UFC President Dana White made the fight official on Tuesday via Kevin Iole before the UFC shared the news themselves. Lawler hasn’t fought since last summer when he dropped a unanimous decision to Neil Magny. “Ruthless” has actually lost his last four fights and five of his last six, which is a far cry from the championship form he displayed back in 2014 to 2016. Despite being on a losing skid, however, Lawler is not thinking about retirement anytime soon. In fact, the team Sanford MMA product says he is excited to return to the Octagon in short order.

Former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler says he’s not thinking about retirement “at all” heading into his fight against Neil Magny. Lawler filled in on short notice for Geoff Neal against Magny, and the two will now lock horns in the co-main event of this Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 33 event. For the veteran Lawler, if he wants to make one more run at the title at age 38 then he needs to get a win here in order to snap his current three-fight losing skid. But win or lose against Magny, Lawler says he is not thinking about hanging up his gloves, which some have suggested.

Two of the best welterweights in the world will scrap it out later this year when Robbie Lawler meets Santiago Ponzinibbio at UFC 245. The bout was first reported by MMAjunkie.com, though the UFC has yet to officially confirm it. UFC 245 takes place December 14 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Lawler vs. Ponzinibbio will likely be a part of the pay-per-view portion of the card.
