Dillon Danis, John Kavanagh react to Conor McGregor's knockout loss

Tom Taylor - January 25, 2021

Dillon Danis and John Kavanagh, two of the most important people in Conor McGregor’s inner circle, have reacted to his loss to Dustin Poirier. McGregor met Poirier in the main event of UFC 257 on Fight Island last Saturday. The pair’s lightweight showdown was a rematch of a 2014 fight that McGregor won by first-round knockout. Dustin Poirier favored to be UFC lightweight champion by end of 2021

Adam Martin - January 25, 2021

Fresh off of a KO win over Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier is favored by the oddsmakers to hold the UFC lightweight title by the end of 2021. Poirier picked up the biggest win of his career in the main event of UFC 257 when he picked up a brilliant second-round knockout win over McGregor. With UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov likely headed into retirement, there will soon be a vacant title that will be fought for. Poirier seems likely to be one half of that fight, but his opponent is still a mystery, with potential opponents including Charles Oliveira, Michael Chandler, and Nate Diaz, amongst others. It’s very fair to say that, right now, the lightweight division is wide open, but with Poirier a slight step ahead.

Dustin Poirier: I am the uncrowned world champion

Adam Martin - January 24, 2021

Fresh off of a big knockout win over Conor McGregor at UFC 257, lightweight contender Dustin Poirier says he’s the uncrowned world champion. Poirier picked up the biggest victory of his career when he finished the UFC superstar McGregor in the main event of one of the biggest pay-per-views in UFC history. It’s Poirier’s second straight win following a decision over Dan Hooker in his last outing, and he’s won six of his last seven fights overall. His only loss during that stretch came against UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. But the Russian is essentially retired right now, and therefore there will have to be a new champion.

Sam Alvey moves down to middleweight after five-fight winless streak, fights Zak Cummings next

Adam Martin - January 24, 2021

Alvey and Cummings will meet in a three-round fight at a UFC Fight Night event that is set to take place on April 10. MMAjunkie.com first confirmed the bout. With Alvey entering this matchup on a five-fight winless skid, his spot on the UFC could be in jeopardy with another loss. With UFC president Dana White announcing a few months ago that the promotion is going to cut 60 fighters, many thought that Alvey could be among the cuts. However, the UFC is going to give him one more chance to win.

At the UFC 257 post-fight press conference, White further explained how they caught the streamer and pointed to what’s next.

Adam Martin - January 24, 2021

In the pre-fight to the pair’s pay-per-view main card bout at UFC 257, Calderwood promised to punch Eye in the face, and she accomplished all that and more in the fight. The Las Vegas-trained fighter took it to Eye for the full 15 minutes, punching and kicking her all over en route to a unanimous decision win. It was a big fight for Calderwood, who lost in upset fashion to Jennifer Maia in her last fight. She needed a good fight against Eye to prove her worth to the champion Valentina Shevchenko, and she did that. With the win over Eye, Calderwood is back to being a title contender.

Adam Martin - January 24, 2021

UFC lightweight Charles Oliveira sent a message to Dustin Poirier following his upset knockout win over Conor McGregor at UFC 257. Poirier knocked out McGregor in brutal fashion in the second round of their UFC 257 main event. The win cements Poirier’s place in the upper echelon of the UFC lightweight division and nearly guarantees that he fights for the title in his next fight. UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has still not made a determination either way, but all signs are pointing to Poirier getting another dance partner next.

Michael Chandler scolded by Dana White for celebratory backflip: "Somebody's going to get f*cking hurt"

Adam Martin - January 24, 2021

UFC president Dana White scolded lightweight Michael Chandler for his celebratory backflip, saying “somebody’s going to get f*cking hurt.” Following his KO win over Dan Hooker in the co-main event of UFC 257, newly-minted UFC lightweight contender Chandler did a backflip off the top of the Octagon fence, and it appeared he had hurt his ankles on the way down. Thankfully he’s fine, but it could have been potentially been really bad had he landed the wrong way, and it had White worried. Chandler is certainly not the first fighter to do a backflip to celebrate — Justin Gaethje also does it on the regular — but every time a fighter does a backflip, it leaves White wincing.
