Covington had a stellar performance this past Saturday night (Aug. 3). “Chaos” went one-on-one with Robbie Lawler. He was relentless with his pressure throughout the fight and earned a unanimous decision victory over “Ruthless.” With the victory, Covington is now set to challenge UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.

It was a critical fight for “Chaos” as, should he win, he would finally get that elusive UFC undisputed title shot. In the end, that is exactly what happened as Covington dominated Lawler for the entire fight as he threw over 500 strikes and attempted almost 20 takedowns. The real question is whether or not it will come to fruition. Cormier already has enough on his plate as he is preparing to defend his UFC heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic at UFC 241 next weekend in Anaheim. If “DC” can improve to 2-0 against Miocic — the longest reigning UFC heavyweight champion of all-time — a trilogy fight with Jones could be absolutely massive.

Stephen Thompson believes UK fighter Leon Edwards should fight Kamaru Usman next. He’s not so sure about Jorge Masvidal. Thompson gave his take on the welterweight title situation in a recent interview with MMA Fighting. “Leon Edwards is on an 8 fight winning streak, wow,” he said. “So he could possibly be fighting for the title. I know everyone’s talking Masvidal, but he’s had two wins and his third loss was me at MSG. I think there are other people more deserving of the title, but he’s put on some good shows and knocked out some good people so you never know.”

The pair have met previously, thanks to an introduction from UFC President Dana White, and have kept in touch ever since. Covington detailed this call post-fight.

Former UFC welterweight kingpin Robbie Lawler suffered a lopsided decision loss to Colby Covington in the headliner of Saturday’s UFC Newark event. The frustrating defeat served as Lawler’s third in a row, as he had previously suffered losses to Ben Askren and Rafael dos Anjos respectively. It is also worth noting that Robbie’s loss to ‘Funky’ was highly controversial, as the former welterweight champ never physically tapped out to Askren’s bulldog choke.

Colby Covington made some controversial comments about Matt Hughes following his victory over Robbie Lawler at UFC Newark. After dominating ‘Ruthless’ for twenty-five straight minutes inside of the Octagon, Covington mocked Robbie’s longtime friend and training partner Matt Hughes in his post-fight speech.

Despite a lopsided decision win over Robbie Lawler at UFC Newark, Colby Covington was now rewarded with a bonus by the UFC. Covington put on a tremendous performance in the main event again Lawler, shutting him out on the scorecards. Yet, he did not receive a bonus despite a record-setting performance. Although Covington did not get a finish in the fight, there have been numerous fighters who have won bonuses despite not finishing their fights. For instance, his rival Kamaru Usman got a bonus when he defeated Rafael dos Anjos via decision in a non-title main event last year. Israel Adesanya also got a bonus for his decision win over Brad Tavares. The UFC chose not to give one to Covington for his dusting of Lawler, and there have already been fans and media who have spoken up about the perceived snub.

Colby Covington earned himself a welterweight title shot after dusting Robbie Lawler in the main event of UFC Newark, but he almost didn’t make it to the fight on account of a bad cut. ESPN’s Ariel Helwani reports that Covington suffered a nasty cut in training three weeks before his fight against Robbie Lawler. The cut was due to an accidental headbutt. According to Helwani, a doctor told Covington he should seriously consider pulling out of the fight because of how close the cut was to his eye.

One of the breakout stars at UFC Newark was Nasrat Harqparast. The 23-year-old German- born fighter knocked out Joaquim Silva in the second round in brutal fashion, winning a Performance of the Night bonus for his handiwork. In his corner for the fight was none other than MMA legend Georges St. Pierre. Haqparast trains at Tristar Gym in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where GSP of course trains. Haqparast was lucky enough that GSP cornered him for this fight, and he said the future UFC Hall of Famer liked what he saw.

UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington got into a heated argument at the post-fight show following UFC on ESPN 5. Covington defeated Robbie Lawler in the main event to secure the next title shot at Usman later this year. The trash talking between the two went on for a while and they nearly came to blows during the interview before UFC security stepped in and producers ended the segment.

One of the most respected fighters in the game, Cormier took to his social media to praise Covington for the ridiculous pace he set for 25 minutes in the cage against Lawler. Covington won the fight via lopsided unanimous decision.
