It appears that BMF title holder Jorge Masvidal will challenge Kamaru Usman for the promotions welterweight championship after all. Earlier this year it was reported that the UFC was looking to book ‘Gamebred’ against ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ at a July pay-per-view event. However, negotiations between Masvidal and the UFC stalled, so the promotion turned to streaking contender Gilbert Burns.

Yesterday evening it was announced that Gilbert Burns had contracted the Coronavirus and was thus forced to withdraw from his scheduled UFC 251 title fight with reigning welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.

Yesterday evening news broke that Burns (19-3 MMA) had contracted the Coronavirus and was no longer able to compete against Usman (16-1 MMA) in next weekend’s UFC 251 event headliner as scheduled.

Instead of taking the UFC’s offer to fight Kamaru Usman at UFC 251, which he believes is below fair market value, Masvidal decided to hold out instead. The UFC then called upon Gilbert Burns to take on Usman in the main event of UFC 251, while Masvidal sits on the sidelines instead.

Masvidal was supposed to fight UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman but he was unable to come to an agreement with the UFC on the financials of the deal. The UFC wanted Masvidal to fight on his old contract while Masvidal was hoping to spur a PPV headliner against Nate Diaz at UFC 244 into the a new deal. The UFC refused to give Masvidal more money and he decided to hold out instead, which led to Gilbert Burns stepping in. Burns now faces Usman at UFC 251 on July 11 in the main event.
