The former UFC light heavyweight champion was set to be one-half of the first First Night event out of the UFC Apex since 2020. The Polish fighter was looking to rebound following a loss to Glover Teixeira at UFC 267. However, it seems that his redemption will have to wait.

Kamaru Usman is the UFC’s No.1-ranked pound-for-pound fighter. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ has revealed that he was more than willing to defend that rank in 2020, and move up in weight. Usman was willing to move up 35 pounds, in fact. In a recent interview with GQ, Usman revealed that he wanted to move up in weight to fight Jan Blachowicz. The Polish fighter was the UFC’s light-heavyweight champion at the time and had recently defeated Usman’s countryman in Israel Adesanya.

UFC 267 ended up being a good one as in the main event Texeira finally became a UFC champion as he submitted Blachowicz in the second round. Blachowicz and Anderson fought twice in the UFC, and the two are still bitter rivals to this very day. The first time they met in the Octagon was at UFC 191 in September 2015. At that point in Blachowicz’s career, he was a very poor grappler and Anderson took advantage of it by taking him down for 15 minutes and grinding out a decision. The two then rematched five years later at UFC Rio Rancho in February 2020, with Blachowicz knocking out Anderson in the first round to earn a title shot at the light heavyweight belt.

Blachowicz and Teixeira meet each other on Saturday night in the main event of UFC 267 with the 205lbs belt on the line that currently belongs to Blachowicz. It’s a fight between two of the oldest fighters in the division as Blachowicz is 38 and Teixeira just turned 42 on Thursday. At Thursday’s pre-fight press conference, a Happy Birthday song broke out for Teixeira among the fans in attendance, and then Blachowicz joined in on the singing. Just days before these two lock horns inside the Octagon, Blachowicz sang him Happy Birthday.

Santos is a common opponent of both Blachowicz and Teixeira, who meet in the main event of this weekend’s numbered UFC event. In February 2019, Santos became the last man to hand Blachowicz a loss when he knocked him out in the Czech Republic to become the No. 1 contender at 205lbs. That win over Blachowicz set up Santos with a title fight against Jon Jones at UFC 239, and he came super close to winning the belt, ultimately losing a split decision. In Santos’ next fight after the loss to Jones, he was submitted by Teixeira in a back-and-forth fight. So he knows both men very well.
