Daniel Cormier has spent the majority of his career competing as a heavyweight, but from 2014 to early 2018, he spent a nine-fight stint in the light heavyweight division. While Cormier realized massive success as a heavyweight, capturing the light heavyweight title and beating the likes of Dan Henderson, Anthony Johnson (twice), Alexander Gustafsson, Anderson Silva and Volkan Oezdemir, his time in the division was not easy.

Now, with very few other contenders in the running, they’re expected to run it back at some point in 2020 — marking three straight years where they would’ve squared off.

Ever since Miocic won the pair’s second fight to reclaim the UFC heavyweight title, the expectation has been that they will meet in a tie-breaking trilogy fight next. Last week, however, Miocic’s manager Jim Walter provided an update that implied the champ wants to fight somebody new instead of Cormier once he’s healthy.

The date for this trilogy fight, however, is still a mystery. Speaking to MMA Junkie, Cormier shed a bit of light on the timeframe for this fight. He believes that, as the UFC’s calendar for the first quarter of 2020 is filling up, there might not be time for his tie-breaker with Miocic until at least June.

Given his position in the heavyweight rankings, Blaydes will be watching this Miocic vs. Cormier fight — which will mark the pair’s third meeting — very closely. And when the cage door closes, he expects the reigning champion Miocic to come out on top.

He’s trained with Cormier at American Kickboxing Academy for many of those years. Based on that, watching Cormier lose the UFC heavyweight title to Stipe Miocic at UFC 241 was not easy for him. That being said, Bhullar is still proud of his friend’s performance.

Regrettably, the pair never got the chance to share the cage and likely never will, as Manuwa has since retired, and Cormier has hiked up to the heavyweight division. Much of Cormier’s time in the heavyweight division has been consumed by a rivalry with Stipe Miocic. The pair are tied 1-1 across two previous title fights, with Cormier winning the first encounter by first-round knockout, and Miocic winning the rematch, which occurred at UFC 241 in August, by fourth-round TKO.
