Daniel Cormier has spent the majority of his career competing as a heavyweight, but from 2014 to early 2018, he spent a nine-fight stint in the light heavyweight division. While Cormier realized massive success as a heavyweight, capturing the light heavyweight title and beating the likes of Dan Henderson, Anthony Johnson (twice), Alexander Gustafsson, Anderson Silva and Volkan Oezdemir, his time in the division was not easy.

UFC heavyweight contender and color commentator Daniel Cormier defended the judges’ scorecards after Jon Jones defeat Dominick Reyes by decision at UFC 247. Jones won a highly controversial split decision over Reyes in the main event of UFC 247, with the judges scoring it 48-47, 48-47 and 49-46 in favor of the champion. Dana White claims that Daniel Cormier has been offered other fights by the UFC, but the former two-weight world champion has his heart set on the trilogy fight with Stipe Miocic. Cormier lost the UFC Heavyweight Championship to Miocic back at UFC 241 last year, taking the series to 1-1 between the two men. Now, with very few other contenders in the running, they’re expected to run it back at some point in 2020 — marking three straight years where they would’ve squared off.

Ever since Miocic won the pair’s second fight to reclaim the UFC heavyweight title, the expectation has been that they will meet in a tie-breaking trilogy fight next. Last week, however, Miocic’s manager Jim Walter provided an update that implied the champ wants to fight somebody new instead of Cormier once he’s healthy.

The date for this trilogy fight, however, is still a mystery. Speaking to MMA Junkie, Cormier shed a bit of light on the timeframe for this fight. He believes that, as the UFC’s calendar for the first quarter of 2020 is filling up, there might not be time for his tie-breaker with Miocic until at least June.
