Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz have shared reactions following Islam Makhachev’s submission victory over Dustin Poirier at UFC 302. Makhachev (26-1 MMA) and Poirier (30-9 MMA) collided in tonight’s pay-per-view headliner in New Jersey with the promotion’s lightweight title up for grabs.

The Octagon returned to New Jersey for tonight’s UFC 302 event, a twelve-bout fight card headlined by Islam Makhachev vs. Dustin Poirier. The highly anticipated lightweight title fight resulted in a thrilling back and forth affair. Islam Makhachev was able to get off to a strong start in the opening round, dominating Dustin Poirier on the canvas. However, ‘The Diamond’ had a much better second frame and was able to gain some confidence. Round three resulted in another good round for Makhachev, as he was once again able to get the fight to the floor. Then, in round four, ‘The Diamond’ was able to find success on the feet, opening up a bad cut on the reigning champ. Despite his best efforts, Poirier wound up getting taken down in the fifth and final round, which allowed Islam to lock up a fight-ending d’arce choke submission (see that here).

The Brazilian is the betting favorite and he has confidence he will be able to get back into the win column in a big way.

UFC women’s bantamweight contender Kayla Harrison was recently seen training with Alex Pereira. Both the Olympic gold medalist and ‘Poatan’ competed at UFC 300 in April. There, Kayla Harrison earned a second-round stoppage victory over former champion Holly Holm. In the main event of the pay-per-view card, Alex Pereira scored a first-round knockout win over Jamahal Hill. ‘Sweet Dreams’ had previously vacated the title due to injury last year.

Former Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson is heading to the NFL over the UFC. The 24-year-old recently wrapped up a controversial stint with the WWE. Gable Steveson chose to sign with the professional wrestling company despite offers from the UFC and others in 2021. Ultimately, the former Minnesota amateur wrestler just wasn’t a good fit. After years of training, Steveson was released after just one televised match earlier this month.

Former UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland isn’t pulling any punches ahead of his Octagon return against Paulo Costa. Strickland and Costa will fight in the UFC 302 co-main event on Saturday in Newark. The matchup is a potential No. 1 contender fight and a chance for Strickland to make a great case for another middleweight title shot.
