Official: Tony Ferguson will not compete at UFC 254

UFC lightweight contender Tony Ferguson has officially been removed from UFC 254 after his proposed fight with Dustin Poirier fell through. Ferguson was set to fight Poirier in the co-main event of UFC 254. The fight would have likely been a No. 1 contender bout, with the winner of the fight taking on the victor of the main event between UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and interim champ Justin Gaethje. It was also extra insurance just in case anything happened to the main event fighters, as either Ferguson or Poirier could have filled in for the fight.

UFC welterweight standout Michel Pereira says he wants to slap Colby Covington in the face because “he’s such a disrespectful guy.” Pereira is one of the most exciting up-and-coming welterweights in the UFC and he is coming off of a third-round submission win over Zelim Imadaev in his last fight. After the fight, Pereira called out several superstar fighters including Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz. You can now add Covington to the list, as the Brazilian is not a fan of “Chaos.”

UFC president Dana White says that aging warrior Donald Cerrone “needs to win badly” when he takes on Niko Price at UFC Vegas 11. Cerrone is one of the greatest fighters of all time and is a surefire UFC Hall of Famer when it’s all said and done. Just last year he was on a three-fight win streak against Al Iaquinta, Alexander Hernandez, and Mike Perry, but ever since then it’s been a tough go for “Cowboy.” Cerrone has lost his last four fights in a row against Anthony Pettis, Conor McGregor, Justin Gaethje, and Tony Ferguson, leading some to suggest he should retire.

Blachowicz and Reyes will battle for the vacant UFC light heavyweight title in the co-main event of UFC 253, which is scheduled for September 26 on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. The division’s throne was left vacant after Jon Jones, the long-time champion, decided to move up to the heavyweight division.

McGregor, who previously ruled over the UFC lightweight and featherweight divisions, announced his retirement on June 6. Former Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler has officially signed with the UFC, and has already been tapped as an understudy for the UFC 254 main event. UFC 254 will be headlined by a lightweight title fight between undefeated champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and interim champion Justin Gaethje. Should either man fail to make it into the cage, Chandler will be called upon to replace them.

UFC featherweight Mirsad Bektic thankfully got a short-notice opponent for UFC Vegas 11 as Damon Jackson returns to the Octagon. Bektic was supposed to fight Eduardo Garagorri, but a cornerman for Garagorri tested positive for Garagorri tested positive for COVID-19 and the fighter was removed from the card out of caution. With Garagorri out, Bektic now takes on Jackson at this Saturday’s UFC Vegas 11 event. Bloody Canvas first broke the news of the fight.

UFC women’s strawweight standout Mackenzie Dern says that she left Black House after her husband got into a fight with her coach. Dern is one of the top-15 women’s strawweights on the UFC roster and this Saturday at UFC Vegas 11 she faces off against veteran Randa Markos. For Dern, she’ll be looking to get another win in 2020 after submitting Hannah Cifers with a kneebar in her last outing. She will be doing so with a new camp after recently departing from Team Black House as she is now learning the striking game under the tutelage of Jason Parillo.

Chimaev was the star of UFC Fight Island in July with his vicious stoppage wins over Rhys McKee and John Phillips. The UFC matchmakers are extremely high on Chimaev and have already booked him for his next two fights. The Swede takes on Meerschaert this weekend at UFC Vegas 11 and then fights again in November against veteran Demian Maia at welterweight, leading Meerschaert to say he feels “disrespected.”

Volkanovski most recently competed at UFC 251 on Fight Island, where he won a controversial split decision over Max Holloway to keep his featherweight title. In the two months since then, Cejudo has been all over social media chirping Volkanovski and looking to fight him. The UFC has not yet booked Volkanovski for his next fight, leading to fans and media speculating that Cejudo could potentially jump the line and get it.
