The Octagon remained in Nevada for tonight’s UFC Vegas 28 event, a thirteen-bout fight card headlined by Jairzinho Rozenstruik vs. Augusto Sakai. The highly anticipated heavyweight main event resulted in another first round finish for ‘Bigi Boy’. After a lengthy feeling out process to begin the fight, Jairzinho Rozenstruik began to apply the pressure in the final two minutes. Eventually he was able to catch Augusto Sakai with a crisp combination that sent the Brazilian crashing down to the canvas. From there, Rozenstruik would finish the job with ground and pound.

Paulo Costa has been forced to withdraw from his slated UFC fight with Jared Cannonier and will be replaced by fellow middleweight Kelvin Gastelum. Costa (13-1 MMA) and Cannonier (13-5 MMA) were expected to headliner a UFC event on August 21 in a location still to be determined. However, according to ESPN‘s Brett Okamoto, ‘The Eraser’ has been forced to withdraw from the bout and will be replaced by former TUF winner Kelvin Gastelum.

The official weigh-ins for UFC Vegas 28 took place on Friday in Las Vegas and all 28 of the fighters scheduled to compete have made weight. The main event of UFC Vegas 28 sees Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Augusto Sakai lock horns in a clash of top-10 ranked heavyweights. Rozenstruik is 5-2 overall in the UFC but he is coming off of a tough loss to Ciryl Gane in his last fight, while Sakai is 4-1 in the UFC and coming off of a brutal TKO defeat to Alistair Overeem. For both men to remain in title contention in a stacked division they will need to go in there and get the win here.

Ahead of the big fight, Woodley and Paul had their first staredown on Thursday night. Paul took the microphone following the faceoff and went off on an expletive-filled rant against the UFC and its fighter pay.

Speaking on Showtime ahead of this weekend’s big fight, Paul was asked why he decided to go into boxing instead of pursuing mixed martial arts. Before he turned to boxing, Paul was a high-school wrestler and was said to be very good on the mats. But so far, Paul has remained focused on boxing and not MMA, and there’s a reason for that, as Paul thinks MMA is hard.

Kevin Lee says that a fight with UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman “needs to be made eventually” now that he’s fighting at 170lbs. Lee will return to the UFC’s welterweight division in July when he takes on undefeated phenom Sean Brady at UFC 264. For Lee, he is coming back to the Octagon after a long layoff following a submission loss to Charles Oliveira in March 2020. He is also returning to the welterweight division for the first time since 2019 when he lost by submission to Rafael dos Anjos in a failed bid to make a run at 170lbs. He is hoping that, now that it’s two years later in 2021, he will now be able to make a better run up the UFC welterweight ladder.

A middleweight bout between Uriah Hall and Sean Strickland moved from UFC 265 and is now set as the main event for an upcoming Fight Night. Hall vs. Strickland is a battle between two of the top-15 ranked middleweights on the UFC roster. The fight was expected to serve as one of the five main-card bouts on the UFC 265 pay-per-view card in August, but instead, the fight was taken off that card and has now been shifted up a week. Hall and Strickland will now meet for five rounds or less in the main event of the UFC Fight Night card on July 31, according to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani.

Bellator star Dillon Danis was critical of the upcoming Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley fight booking that will take place in the boxing ring. Paul and Woodley had their first public staredown on Thursday night, and Danis had to jump in with a few words to say. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace, who had been chasing a fight against Paul himself, took to his social media on Thursday to take a shot at both Paul and Woodley for taking part in this fight between the former UFC fighter and the YouTuber.
