Dustin Poirier is the current interim lightweight champion and he will take on the undisputed champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, at UFC 242. If Poirier can get past the undefeated Russian, fans will immediately begin speculating who is next for him. A rematch against Nurmagomedov could certainly happen, or a bout with Conor McGregor. However, Poirier says it is clear Tony Ferguson deserves the next title shot. But, he isn’t focused on any of that right now.

The undefeated Dagestani fighter has risen through the ranks in the UFC and is now the promotion’s lightweight champion. He gained further international notoriety late last year when he fought Conor McGregor at UFC 229. “The Eagle” submitted his Irish rival in the fourth round.

In Poirier’s case, he is going to Abu Dhabi to take on undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov where the Russian will have the Muslim crowd behind him. “This is real, I’m a world champion,” Poirier said to ESPN. “As is he. This is a super fight to me. That’s how I feel, that’s what this feels like to me. We’re going to a sold-out arena they’re building as we speak in Abu Dhabi, the middle of the desert, and princes and sheiks will be there. It’s crazy. It’s a Rocky movie.”

UFC 236 was a card to remember. The event, which went down in Atlanta, Georgia last weekend, was topped by a pair of interim title fights, as Dustin Poirier defeated Max Holloway to capture interim lightweight gold, and Israel Adesanya defeated Kelvin Gastelum to win the interim middleweight title. Both fights were absolute wars, earning all four fighters involved Fight of the Night honors. As is so often the case with unforgettable wars like the ones we saw at UFC 236, there were some pretty emotional moments backstage after the fights wrapped up.
