UFC Fighters mourn the passing of rap legend DMX

Many UFC fighters, including middleweight legend Anderson Silva, paid tribute to DMX after the rap legend passed away on Friday. Earl Simmons (DMX) died at the age of 50 on April 9, this after being administered to hospital due to a drug overdose seven days earlier. The legendary rapper had been on life support the past week after suffering from a heart attack.

On June 19, at the Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico, Silva will have his first fight since being released from the UFC in the ring. It’s a very intriguing matchup as the Brazilian is known for his boxing but Chavez Jr. is a former boxing world champion, and to no surprise is the betting favorite.

Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva shared a cryptic message with his fans following his move from the Octagon to boxing. On Tuesday, it was officially announced that Silva will be taking his talents to the boxing ring to take on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in June in Mexico. Silva was unceremoniously booted from the UFC last fall following a knockout loss to Uriah Hall. The soon-to-be-46-year-old Brazilian was not performing well in the UFC, and with the promotion in roster-cutting mode, one of the sport’s idols was let go. However, Silva still has the itch to compete and if the UFC doesn’t want him, then he’s happy to head to boxing and take on a new challenge.

Former UFC superstar Anderson Silva has signed his contract for the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. boxing match, and a date and venue are now set. It was recently reported that Silva would be taking his talents from the Octagon to the boxing ring when he takes on Chavez Jr., and now the fight is official. According to TMZ Sports, Silva has signed the contract for the fight against Chavez Jr., which will take place at Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico, on June 19. The event, which will be titled the “Tribute to the Kings,” will air live on pay-per-view.

It was exactly 10 years ago today that Anderson Silva knocked out Vitor Belfort with a front kick in the main event of UFC 126. Silva and Belfort are two of the biggest stars in Brazilian MMA ever, and on February 5, 2011, they met in the main event of UFC 126. At the time, Silva was the UFC middleweight champion and was coming off of an incredible comeback win over Chael Sonnen. But before beating Sonnen he had a string of lackluster performances, and not everyone was sold on Silva. Belfort, who was coming off of a knockout win over Rich Franklin, was said to be the man that could finish Silva. But Silva wasn’t hearing it. Instead, he landed a front kick right to the jaw on Belfort, KOing him cold.

A women’s featherweight title fight between champion Amanda Nunes and challenger Megan Anderson will now go down on March 6. Nunes and Anderson were originally slated to collide at UFC 256, which occured on December 12. Unfortunately, Nunes was forced out of that initially slated matchup with an injury, and the bout was put on ice.

UFC middleweight Chris Weidman reacted to the recent UFC roster cuts, suggesting the promotion is cutting veteran fighters due to their pay. UFC president Dana White recently revealed that 60 fighters would be cut from the roster, and it started when former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva got the ax. Since then, other high-priced veterans such as Yoel Romero and Anthony Johnson were also let go. White has said the cuts have everything to do with performance and nothing to do with fighter pay, but not everyone is buying that. Weidman certainly isn’t.

MMA legend Vitor Belfort has called out rival Anderson Silva and fellow veteran Chael Sonnen, saying to “bring the legends back.” Belfort fought Silva at UFC 126 in February 2011 and suffered a historic KO loss after Silva landed an incredible front kick to finish him. Belfort and Silva have always been tied to a rematch but to this point, nothing has ever been booked. As for Sonnen, Belfort was supposed to fight him at UFC 175 in July 2014, but Sonnen failed his drug test and the bout was canceled. All three fighters are no longer in the UFC, with Belfort part of ONE Championship, Sonnen with Bellator, and Silva a free agent.

Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. says that he could fight Anderson Silva next after he takes on rival Mike Tyson this Saturday night. The 51-year-old Jones Jr. comes out of a two-year layoff when he returns to the ring against the 54-year-old Tyson, who is stepping into the ring for the first time in 15 years. The two will meet in an eight-round exhibition bout that features a modified ruleset in the main event of Saturday’s boxing card live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Despite the age of both men and the controversial ruleset that will be used, there seems to be quite a bit of interest in this bout from fans and media.

MMA analyst Chael Sonnen believes that former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, his long-time archrival, will never fight again. Sonnen and Silva were part of a memorable rivalry in the early 2010s. The two met at UFC 117 and, after Sonnen dominated the first four rounds of the fight, Silva came back to win in the fifth round by submission. They then fought in a rematch at UFC 148, with Silva winning via second-round TKO. The rivalry between the two was heated at the time but in recent years both men have become much more cordial with one another, and are basically friends now.

Indeed, Silva has since then been formally released by the promotion. White has gone on record saying that he believes that the 45-year-old Silva should hang up his gloves and retire.
