Dana White says Justin Gaethje is not next in line for a title shot

As things begin to pick up for the UFC in 2020, several fights have been made throughout the first quarter of the year and that includes a lightweight title fight between champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and top-contender Tony Ferguson. While this is the UFC’s fifth attempt at making a fight between both fighters, other contenders like Justin Gaethje are waiting on the sidelines. Recently, Gaethje told The Luke Thomas Show on Sirius XM that he would be willing to replace either Ferguson or Nurmagomedov in the scheduled UFC 249 title fight, if either were forced to withdraw. While Gaethje’s recent showings back up the claim that he deserves a title shot, UFC President Dana White doesn’t share the same thoughts.

As Conor McGregor prepares to return at UFC 246 and begin his 2020 “season”, he still has his eyes on winning the UFC lightweight title once again. While Donald Cerrone is his opponent at UFC 246, McGregor still has his sights set on getting redemption on his bitter rival and current lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. During an interview with BT Sport, McGregor discussed his state of mind heading into their first fight at UFC 229, and then revealed that he was offered a rematch with Nurmagomedov before the champion reached a deal to face Tony Ferguson.

Most known for his witty one-liners and legendary trash talk, McGregor was very respectful towards Cerrone throughout the press conference, crediting maturity for his different tone of voice. When asked about their previous run-in over four years ago at the UFC “Go Big” Press Conference in 2015, McGregor said so much has changed from their initial encounter, and there will be no bad blood on fight night.

Yet, he won’t ever rule out a return to the featherweight or a rematch with Jose Aldo which many fans wanted to see after the 13-second knockout.

Former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker will not be making his return to the Octagon in March. According to Ariel Helwani of ESPN, Whittaker is out of his scheduled fight against Jared Cannonier at UFC 248 due to personal reasons. Helwani added that the UFC would like to keep Cannonier on the card but no opponent has been found to replace Whittaker as of now. There was no further information given as to why Whittaker is out of the fight.

That leaves Hermansson without a dance partner, and so it makes sense that he’s calling out Gastelum, who is also looking for his next opponent.

Instead, the American claims he wants to test the brick-fisted Irishman on the feet. While this comment from Cerrone sounds like good news for McGregor, who is one of the best strikers in the sport, the Irishman seems like he’ll be well-prepared in the event that the American is bluffing.
