Surging UFC middleweight contender Marvin Vettori has sent a threatening message to the division’s reigning champion Israel Adesanya. Vettori and Adesanya have fought previously, as Adesanya defeated the Italian by split decision back in 2018. Yet Vettori has not beaten since, and after extending his win-streak to four-straight with a huge win decision over Jack Hermansson last weekend, is well positioned for a potential championship rematch with the Nigerian-born Kiwi.

The official UFC rankings have been updated after last weekend’s UFC Vegas 16 card, and as expected, there have been some big changes. Most notably, Italian middleweight contender Marvin Vettori has rocketed up eight spots, into the middleweight top-5, on the strength of his thrilling decision victory over Jack Hermansson in the main event.

In the main event of UFC Vegas 16, Marvin Vettori stepped up on short notice to take on top-five contender, Jack Hermansson. Vettori was looking for the biggest win of his career while Hermansson was trying to prove he should get a number one contender bout next time out. However, it was the Italian who won the fight by decision and nearly finished Hermansson in the first.

UFC middleweight Marvin Vettori revealed the facial injuries from the Jack Hermansson fight feel “like he had a knife in his glove.” Vettori and Hermansson set a UFC record for the most combined significant strikes landed in a middleweight fight ever. Both men went to the well, taking the fight into deep waters and trying to get the knockout with every last swing. Ultimately at the end of 25 minutes, Vettori was given the nod by the judges on the scorecards. It was a close and competitive fight and both men landed some good shots, but Vettori landed the more significant strikes, including a big knockdown in the first round.

Middleweights Jack Hermansson and Marvin Vettori were named bonus winners following UFC Vegas 16, winning $50,000 for “Fight of the Night.” Hermansson and Vettori went to war for 25 minutes. Both men threw the kitchen sink at each other, setting a record for most combined significant strikes landed in a UFC middleweight bout. At the end of the five rounds, the judges sided with Vettori, scoring the bout 49-46, 49-46, and 49-45 in favor of the Italian middleweight contender. Vettori now figures to earn himself a top-five spot in the UFC middleweight ranks with the win.

After Kevin Holland fell off the card due to a positive COVID-19 test, Vettori stepped up on short notice to take on Hermansson in the main event of UFC Vegas 16. Many fans and observers of the sport were surprised to see Vettori enter the bout as the betting underdog over the higher-ranked Hermansson, but Vettori showed that he’s an elite middleweight by going 25 minutes with Hermansson and winning a clear decision.

Vettori should take over Hermansson’s old spot at No. 4 in the rankings following the victory, which is the Italian’s fourth straight win in a row. Marvin Vettori doesn’t believe Israel Adesanya’s light heavyweight run will go well. Sometime in early 2021, it is expected that Adesanya will move up in weight to battle Jan Blachowicz for the light heavyweight title. Although many don’t think the fight should happen all signs point to that being the case.

However, in the months since, it has been a difficult time getting a fight with someone ranked above him. That all changed when he was supposed to fight Jacare Souza at UFC 256 but was pulled from that fight to battle Jack Hermansson in the main event of UFC Vegas 16.

UFC middleweight Marvin Vettori opened as the betting favorite for his upcoming main event fight against Jack Hermansson at UFC Vegas 16. Vettori was originally slated to fight Ronaldo Souza at UFC 256, but after Kevin Holland tested positive for COVID-19 and was removed from UFC Fight Night 16, the UFC matched up Vettori against Hermansson. Holland, in turn, is now scheduled to fight Souza a week later. Vettori will now take on Hermansson in his very first UFC main event and it’s the first time he’s been booked to fight five rounds during his career.
