Home to champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and stars like Conor McGregor, Tony Ferguson, Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaethje and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, it is absolutely packed with top talent. Speaking with Rich Eisen this week, UFC President Dana White gave his take on the UFC lightweight division and the exciting matchups that can be made therein. He even sees retired former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre as a player in the division.

Don’t close the book on a 2019 return for Conor McGregor just yet. McGregor has teased retirements and returns several times. The former UFC “champ-champ” competed back in Oct. 2018 against Khabib Nurmagomedov. “The Eagle” successfully retained his UFC lightweight title by submitting McGregor in the fourth round at UFC 229. Chaos ensued in a post-fight brawl and both men were suspended and fined for their roles in the fracas. They are both free to return to the Octagon now and Nurmagomedov will be in action on Sept. 7 against Dustin Poirier.

At UFC 205, featherweight champion, Conor McGregor was moving up in weight to take on lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez. It was a symbolic card for a number of reasons given it was the first time the UFC was in Madison Square Garden, and McGregor could become the first champ-champ in promotional history. It ended up being a historic night as the Irishman ended up TKO’ing Alvarez in the second round. McGregor dominated the fight from start to finish and dropped “The Underground King” three times in the fight en route to victory.

Five years just passed since Conor McGregor fought Diego Brandao at UFC Fight Night 46 in Dublin, Ireland. McGregor was still and up-and-coming featherweight at that point in time, and the first-round TKO win over Brandao helped legitimatize McGregor as a forced to be reckoned with at 145lbs in the Octagon. On the fifth-year anniversary of their fight, McGregor took to social media to tell his former foe that he thinks he should be back in the UFC. Brandao was released by the UFC in 2016, and has been fighting for promotions such as RIZIN and Fight Nights Global ever since then.

Holloway, who will put his featherweight strap on the line against Frankie Edgar in next weekend’s UFC 240 main event, recently tossed some shade towards ‘Mystic Mac’ for his “Bottle Cap Challenge” video.

Surging UFC welterweight contender Jorge Masvidal has recently been campaigning for a showdown with former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor. In fact, Masvidal’s manager recently stated that McGregor is the only opponent they’ll accept outside of a title fight with welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. Unfortunately for team Masvidal, UFC President Dana White says it’s not happening.

Jorge Masvidal scored arguably this biggest win of his career earlier this month, defeating former Bellator and ONE champion Ben Askren by way of knockout. ‘Gamebred’ set a record for the ‘fastest knockout in his history’ with the win, as he needed on 5-seconds to put an end to Askren’s undefeated streak.

There have been rumors of a potential matchup between Conor McGregor and Donald Cerrone for quite some time now, but Cerrone says the reason the fight hasn’t been booked yet is because McGregor won’t sign the contract. Speaking to MMAjunkie.com Radio, Cerrone confirmed that he’s been close several times to signing a contract to fight McGregor, including a potential matchup back in 2016, when McGregor fought Nate Diaz at UFC 196 on short notice in place of Rafael dos Anjos. Diaz ended up winning that fight by submission and became a superstar in the process, and Cerrone still believes it should have been him who fought McGregor that night.

Michael Chiesa is set for his second welterweight fight this Saturday at UFC 239, where he will take on Diego Sanchez. Moving up to welterweight was something was considering for a long time given how big he is. He says he would wake up a “couple of pounds” over 180 pounds with two-weeks until fight night — quite a distance from the lightweight division’s 156-pound limit. Not having to cut as much weight as a welterweight is a huge bonus and a big stress reliever for Chiesa.
