UFC President Dana White believes a rematch between bitter rivals Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor could take place following UFC 242. Nurmagomedov (28-0) kept his undefeated record in check this evening in Abu Dhabi defeating now-former interim lightweight title holder Dustin Poirier by third round submission.

“The Veteran Voice of the Octagon” Bruce Buffer is fantasizing about a Conor McGregor vs. Georges St-Pierre fight — even if he thinks it’s just a pipe dream. Conor McGregor hasn’t fought since his historic loss against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229. He vacated the Octagon after tapping out in the fourth round and hasn’t returned since. He is, however, in frequent communication with Dana White and is looking to return for the right opportunity. Buffer believes that McGregor needs to earn his spot in the rankings again.

For a time, it sounded as though former two-division UFC champ Conor McGregor might attend the UFC 242 card this weekend in Abu Dhabi, which is topped by a fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier. According to UFC President Dana White, however, McGregor will not be attending the card. He will, however, be watching the pay-per-view.

This Saturday, in the main event of UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi, UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov will attempt to defend his title against interim champion Dustin Poirier. In the subsequent moments, McGregor got physical with several of Nurmagomedov’s teammates inside the cage. It was one of the most infamous and chaotic moments in UFC history, and it resulted in multiple suspensions and fines for the fighters involved. This week, the UFC released the Countdown episode for Nurmagomedov’s UFC 242 fight with Dustin Poirier, which featured some new angles of this frenzied post-fight brawl.

Conor McGregor has not fought since UFC 229 when he lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov, but he was close to fighting in July at UFC 240. The Irishman was eager to return to the Octagon and revealed to Ariel Helwani in an interview that he was going to fight Justin Gaethje at that event. However, UFC 240 would have taken place in Madison Square Garden, not in Edmonton as it did. But, a broken hand forced Conor McGregor out of that possible fight.
