Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos will be hunting for a submission when he meets Alan Belcher next month. “Cigano” will get a chance to add another championship to his mantle. He will be fighting fellow ex-UFC athlete Belcher for the inaugural Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA Heavyweight Championship on March 2. After being released from the UFC following a five-fight skid, dos Santos scored a split decision victory over Fabricio Werdum back in September 2023. Now, “Cigano” wants to pull off a rare submission victory.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos certainly isn’t thinking about retirement right now. Dos Santos recently shared the cage with an old foe under bare knuckle MMA rules. “Cigano” went one-on-one with fellow legend Fabricio Werdum earlier this month. It was Werdum’s chance to avenge his now-famous 2008 loss to Dos Santos, which was held under the UFC banner. Ultimately, “Vai Cavalo” once again fell short against Dos Santos, this time via split decision. After the fight, Dos Santos appeared to be quite happy with his handiwork. He didn’t look like someone on the verge of retirement, and he has confirmed plans to continue fighting.

Junior dos Santos believes Ciryl Gane has some dirty tricks up his sleeve. Gane took center stage inside Accor Arena in Paris, France on September 3. He shared the Octagon with Tai Tuivasa. While Tuivasa showed heart, he ultimately crumbled after being on a receiving end of a barrage of heavy strikes from Gane in the third round. “Bam Bam” dropped to the mat from an uppercut and Gane sealed the deal with a couple of hammerfists.

The card also sees the likes of Andrew Sanchez, and Hector Lombard among others competing. Junior dos Santos (21-9) has not fought since December of 2020 when he suffered a TKO loss to Ciryl Gane which marked his fourth in a row. After the loss, he was released from the UFC and initially inked a deal with Triller but a fight never came to fruition, and ended up signing with Eagle FC. On the losing skid, he suffered TKO losses to Jairiznho Rozenstruik, Curtis Blaydes, and Francis Ngannou. His last win came in March of 2019 as he TKO’d Derrick Lewis. The former UFC heavyweight champion also holds notable wins over Tai Tuivasa, Stipe Miocic, Cain Velasquez, and Frank Mir.

Junior Dos Santos has opened up about the ‘absurd mistakes’ he made in his UFC fights with Cain Velasquez. Dos Santos (21-9 MMA) and Velasquez (14-3 MMA) fought a total of three times in the Octagon. The two heavyweights met at UFC Fox 1 in 2011, UFC 155 in 2012, and at UFC 166 in October 2013. While Dos Santos won their first battle, he succumbed to defeat against Cain the next two times out.

The bout is slated as a title eliminator bout. The winner of the fight was expected to face Eagle FC heavyweight champion Rizvan Kuniev, well before today.

Junior dos Santos has signed with Eagle FC. On Wednesday, Khabib Nurmagomedov went on ESPN and announced he has signed Dos Santos to his promotion. The former UFC heavyweight champion will headline an Eagle FC card on May 20 against UFC veteran, Yorgan Se Castro. The co-main event of the card will also see a battle of ex-UFC fighters as Hector Lombard will take on Thiago Silva. The event is expected to take place at FLXcast Arena in Miami.
