Gilbert Melendez unsure on retirement following UFC 239 loss

Gilbert Melendez won’t commit to retiring or continuing his fighting career just yet. Last night (July 6), Melendez returned to action to meet Arnold Allen inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for UFC 239. “El Nino” hadn’t competed since Sept. 2017. After three rounds of action, Melendez suffered his fifth loss in a row.

International Fight Week has come and gone and with it was a stacked UFC 239 card. The card was headlined by Jon Jones looking to defend his light heavyweight title against Thiago Santos. In the co-main event, Amanda Nunes was looking to defend her bantamweight title against Holly Holm. And, in a pivotal welterweight bout, Jorge Masvidal fought Ben Askren. Jones ended up edging out a split-decision win over Santos while Nunes TKO’d Holm in the first round and Masvidal knocked out Askren in five seconds.

Jorge Masvidal set the record for fastest knockout in history at last night’s UFC 239 event, flattening Ben Askren with a flying knee. As soon as the fight started, Masvidal saw Askren coming forward and charged at him with a flying knee. The strike sent ‘Funky’ crashing to the octagon canvas and after a couple of unrequired punches, the referee mercifully stepped in to call a stop to the fight.

After a lopsided loss to Michael Chiesa in the opening main card bout at UFC 239, UFC president Dana White says he will have a ‘serious conversation’ with Diego Sanchez about his fighting future. White told reporters at the post-fight press conference that he will talk to Sanchez about his fighting future, though he cautioned against telling him to outright retire from MMA.

Melvin Guillard pleads guilty to knocking out civilians

Former UFC lightweight Melvin Guillard was in the news last year for all the wrong reasons, and now we know what his fate is with the law. According to a report from TMZ, Guillard recently plead guilty to knocking out civilians on two different occasions in Denver. However, he has struck a plea deal with law officials in Colorado and will not have to serve any more jail time.

The former UFC middleweight champion was finished in the second round via knockout. Rockhold has now lost three of his last four bouts by way of knockout.
