Cormier won that first contest by first-round knockout. After Cormier defended the heavyweight title against Derrick Lewis later that year, he and Miocic then rematched in 2019. That time around, Miocic evened the scored, weathering some early adversity to stop Cormier in the fourth round and reclaim the heavyweight title.

Cormier delivered a strong performance until the body shots administered by Miocic eventually caught up with him. He lost the fight by TKO in the fourth round and subsequently lost his heavyweight crown.

UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic returned his imminent comeback to the Octagon after nearly a year away from the cage. Miocic has not fought since UFC 241 in August 2019 due to injuries and then the coronavirus pandemic. Miocic dealt with an eye injury for months following his rematch with Daniel Cormier at UFC 241 and then afterwards ran into the coronavirus pandemic as a first responder in his native Ohio. UFC president Dana White was among those to criticize the UFC heavyweight champion for turning down fights as Miocic said he would only fight Cormier in the trilogy match once he was finished with his first responder duties. White even threatened to strip Miocic of his title.

The incident sparked an online protest known as Blackout Tuesday. Miocic showed his solidarity to the cause by posting a blank, blacked-out image on Instagram with the caption “#blackouttuesday”.

The pair then rematched at UFC 241 in August 2019, with Miocic winning back his belt with a fourth-round TKO. The UFC has been targeting a trilogy fight between the two rivals ever since, but to date, the fight has not been booked due to injuries to both men and also to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
