The hype is already starting to intensify around a massive super fight between Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski for the lightweight strap. However, before the fight can even happen, contracts and a venue have to be agreed upon. Volkanovski has had a tremendous run as featherweight champion, beating the likes of Max Holloway three times, Brian Ortega and Chan Sung Jung, to name a few. For Makhachev, he finally became a household name after claiming the vacant lightweight title from ex-champion, Charles Oliveira.

Kelvin Gastelum is thinking about returning to welterweight. Gastelum fought at welterweight seven times inside the UFC but missed weight twice, including one when he weighed-in at 180lbs. After having trouble making weight he made the permanent move to welterweight in 2016 and had success right away. Gastelum 3-1 and one No Contest to earn an interim title shot which he lost to Israel Adesanya.

Dillashaw, who had bad blood with Sterling heading in. Sadly for fans, the bout wasn’t exactly a thriller.

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Julianna Pena still has her eyes on Amanda Nunes. ‘The Venezuelan Vixen’ has been out of action since her rematch with ‘The Lioness’ in July. Their first fight six months prior saw one of the biggest upsets in MMA history, as Pena submitted Nunes in round two. In the process, she ended the Brazilian’s near six-year run with gold.

The judges awarded a split decision victory to ‘Sugar’. Fans and fighters alike took issue with that decision, feeling Yan had been robbed of the win.

The undefeated Chimaev (12-0 MMA) most recently met Kevin Holland (23-8 MMA) in the Octagon this past September at UFC 279. The victory for ‘Borz’ came after a submission at 2:13 of round 1. Of course Chimaev was initially scheduled to fight Nate Diaz (21-13 MMA) that day, but couldn’t make weight, sending the promotion into a flurry of re-arranging fights for the event.

Their first outing two years prior was one of the greatest women’s MMA fights of all time. Zhang won that first bout by split decision, but wouldn’t need the judges in the second.

Paul was set to headline a Showtime boxing pay-per-view against Anderson Silva in an intriguing bout. In attendance was Diaz to support his teammate Chris Avila boxing on the undercard. It also added more intrigue to the event as Diaz and Paul do not like one another and have taken shots at one another in hopes of fighting each other.
