Woodley was set to fight Leon Edwards in a five-round welterweight main event but on Sunday Edwards was forced to withdraw due to the coronavirus travel ban from the UK. Most other fighters set to compete at the event were also pulled from the card. That leaves Woodley without an opponent and the status of the card up in the air as the UFC looks to relocate the card to somewhere in the United States. But not if Covington can help it.

UFC welterweight contender Leon Edwards has released a statement on the cancelation of UFC London, calling it “truly heartbreaking.” The Brit was set to headline the event across from rival Tyron Woodley, but neither man will be able to put on a show now after Edwards was forced to withdraw from the event due to the coronavirus outbreak. Numerous other fights on the card have been canceled, and while the UFC has not scrapped the event yet, it may have no choice but to do so at this point in time.

The coronavirus outbreak has led to the majority of sporting events in the world being canceled, but the UFC remains the lone outlier. After hosting UFC Brasilia without a crowd on Saturday, the promotion still plans on holding the UFC London card next Saturday. The UFC is currently in plans to relocate the London card to somewhere in the United States, leaving fighters like Edwards on the out looking in due to the UK travel ban.

UFC welterweight contender Gilbert Burns sent a bold message to Colby Covington following his first-round TKO win over Demian Maia at UFC Brasilia. Burns knocked out the Brazilian jiu-jitsu legend Maia in brutal fashion in the first round of their co-main event attraction and immediately took the microphone afterwards, where he called out Covington to be his next opponent. Both men are Florida-based fighters and after beating the No. 6 ranked Maia, Burns will be able to say that he deserves a fight with the top-5 ranked Covington based on merit.

UFC welterweight legend Demian Maia says he will retire after one more fight, but he wants to fight either Diego Sanchez or Donald Cerrone next. Maia was knocked out in shocking fashion by Gilbert Burns in the co-main event of UFC Brasilia. After controlling the first few minutes of the fight on the ground, the fight went back to the feet where Burns caught Maia with a big left hook, sending him to the mat where a few extra hammer fists put the veteran away. It was only the second knockout loss of Maia’s nearly 20-year MMA career.

Burns dropped Maia with a brutal left hook and immediately celebrated, thinking the referee would step in and stop the fight. But the ref didn’t ump in immediately, making Burns have to go down to the mat and finish Maia off with nasty hammer fists. For Burns, it was hard for him to do that considering how much Maia means to young Brazilian jiu-jitsu grapplers such as him, but at the end of the day, he had to do his job.

UFC lightweight contender Charles Oliveira says that he would move up to welterweight for a superfight against Conor McGregor. Oliveira submitted Kevin Lee in the main event of UFC Brasilia to pick up his seventh straight win inside the Octagon and continue to extend his record for most submission wins in UFC history. The win over Lee was the biggest win of Oliveira’s career to date and will see him move into the top-10 of 155lbs at the next UFC rankings update.

While the majority of the sporting world is bunkering down and not holding its events for the foreseeable future, the UFC continues to operate the status quo. Though no fans were in attendance, the Octagon was still there for UFC Brasilia. White is adamant that the upcoming cards that were set for Ohio and Portland will also find new homes, as will the card that was scheduled to be UFC 249 in Brooklyn.

The UFC is the only major sports league who is still holding its events while the rest of the sporting world has gone into lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. Even Bellator, who currently employs Thomson, postponed its recent Bellator 241 event. The UFC, meanwhile, decided to go ahead with its card in Brasilia, which led to a little spat between Cormier and Thomson on Twitter.
