UFC heavyweight contender Alexander Volkov explained why he was starstruck being in the Octagon across from Alistair Overeem at UFC Vegas 18. Volkov picked up the biggest win of his career when he finished Overeem with punches in the second rounds of their recent main event heavyweight bout. Volkov showed technical striking skills and a heavy hand as he systematically picked apart Overeem with his powerful punches until the referee stopped the fight. Considering how awesome of a performance he had, you’d be surprised to know that Volkov admits he was initially starstruck. For a fighter who had such a long road to the UFC, Volkov can now look back at his career and be proud of it.

In the main event of UFC Vegas 18, Alexander Volkov took on combat sports legend, Alistair Overeem. Both men were looking to cement themselves as top-five heavyweights and it was Volkov who took that next step. Ultimately, it was the Russian who won the fight by second-round TKO as he pieced up Overeem and rocked him several times.

UFC heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem issued a statement following his TKO loss on Saturday night to Alexander Volkov at UFC Vegas 18. Overeem suffered a brutal second-round TKO defeat at the hands of Volkov, who had arguably the best performance of his career to date as he systematically decimated Overeem with pin-point accurate striking and unbelievable power. For Overeem, this loss snapped a two-fight winning streak for the veteran, and it puts into question whether or not “one final run” at the UFC heavyweight title is even possible at this point. Had Overeem won this fight, another run for the belt would have been realistic. But after suffering such a brutal loss at age 40, you have to wonder about his future.

UFC heavyweight contender Alexander Volkov released a statement following his TKO win over Alistair Overeem in the main event of UFC Vegas 18. Volkov put on a striking clinic on Saturday night as he was able to utilize technical striking to break the guard of Overeem and eventually put him away with punches in the second round. It was an incredible victory by Volkov, who should move into the top-five in the UFC heavyweight division with the win. Two huge fights have been announced as the UFC return of heavyweight Alistair Overeem and middleweight Kelvin Gastelum are now official. ESPN’s Brett Okamoto broke both fight announcements on Thursday. On February 6, Overeem will take on Alexander Volkov in a five-round heavyweight fight that headlines a UFC Fight Night card. And on January 30, Gastelum makes his return to the Octagon when he takes on Ian Heinisch. There is no location set for either event as of yet.

Overeem is one of the oldest fighters in the UFC heavyweight division but it hasn’t stopped him from going on a roll as of late. The Dutchman has won four of his last five fights, including brutal TKO wins over Walt Harris and Augusto Sakai in his last two bouts. Overeem is currently the No. 5 ranked heavyweight in the UFC. But that’s not good enough for him, because his goal is still to one day become the UFC heavyweight champion.

UFC heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem continued to call for a rematch against Jairzinho Rozenstruik, saying the two need to run it back. Overeem and Rozenstruik met in the main event of UFC Washington, D.C. in December 2019. Overeem won the first four rounds of the fight and was on his way to winning a unanimous decision until Rozenstruik landed a massive punch with seconds left to go in the contest. Referee Dan Miragliotta saw the damage the punch did to Overeem’s lip and decided to step in and wave off the contest even though Overeem was still conscious.

UFC heavyweight legend Alistair Overeem is hoping to get a rematch with Jairzinho Rozenstruik, telling his rival “let’s run it back.” Overeem and Rozenstruik first met at UFC Washington, D.C. last December. After dominating the fight for nearly the full 25 minutes, Overeem got caught with a big punch by Rozenstruik that knocked him to the ground and ripped his lip open. Referee Dan Miragliotta stepped in and waved the fight off at 4:56 of the fifth round, making it the latest UFC heavyweight stoppage of all time. The stoppage was controversial, however, with Overeem believing the referee stopped the fight too early.

Overeem is coming off of an impressive fifth-round TKO victory over Augusto Sakai at UFC on ESPN+ 34. The veteran heavyweight has won four of his last five fights by knockout, with the lone blemish in that stretch a controversial KO loss to Rozenstruik last December. After dominating the first four rounds of the fight, Overeem was knocked down by a punch from Rozenstruik with just four seconds left, and referee Dan Miragliotta stopped the fight.

UFC heavyweight Augusto Sakai has revealed the injuries he sustained during his loss to Alistair Overeem last weekend. While the rising contender Sakai did look dangerous at points during his showdown with the veteran, he seemed to be overwhelmed by “The Reem” once the fight made it into the championship rounds. At that point, Overeem completely took over before finishing the bout with vicious ground & pound early in the fifth.
