The family of Elias Theodorou have released a statement that includes details of a foundation made in his name and a GoFundMe in his honour. In the late hours of Sunday night, news broke that former UFC fighter Elias Theodorou had passed away at the age of 34 following a battle with what was reported to be liver cancer. Theodorou was always viewed as a bright, bubbly member of the mixed martial arts community, and he was able to find success in the Octagon that included winning his season of The Ultimate Fighter.

The UFC returned to Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday for UFC 279 which was a much different card than originally planned. In the main event, Nate Diaz ended up fighting Tony Ferguson after Khamzat Chimaev missed weight by 7.5lbs for his scrap against Diaz. The Swede was then dropped to the co-main event and was booked to face Kevin Holland.

The MMA world was shocked to learn on Sunday night that Canadian MMA fighter Elias Theodorou had died. He was just 34 years of age, and had been privately battling colon cancer. Theodorou, like many fight fans, became captivated by mixed martial arts after watching The Ultimate Fighter season 1 on Spike TV back in 2006. In 2011 he kicked off his professional MMA career on the Canadian circuit, fighting for Alberta’s Hard Knocks Fighting and Ontario’s Score Fighting Series. When Bellator rolled through Windsor, Ontario, Theodorou competed on the prelims.

Shortly afterwards, Nate Diaz was able to submit Tony Ferguson in the fourth round of the main event to ensure he ended his UFC tenure on a positive note.
