Whittaker last fought in October, when he surrendered the UFC middleweight title to Israel Adesanya. He was briefly scheduled to return to the cage against Jared Cannonier at UFC 248, but ultimately withdrew from the matchup.

Fan favorite strawweight and flyweight fighter Paige VanZant has been listed as a huge betting underdog ahead of her fight with Amanda Ribas. VanZant and Ribas will collide at UFC 251 on July 11 in Abu Dhabi—the setting of the UFC’s much-discussed Fight Island. The bout will be VanZant’s first since a January, 2019 submission win over Rachael Ostovich, as she’s been sidelined with a string of unfortunate arm injuries.

UFC Hall of Famer Ronda Rousey took to social media to congratulate Octagon newcomer Kay Hansen on her stunning armbar submission at UFC on ESPN 12. Hansen, who is only 20 years old, was signed by the UFC one week ago to take on Jinh Yu Frey in a women’s strawweight contest on the UFC on ESPN 12 prelims. Despite being the youngest female fighter on the UFC roster, Hansen had a successful debut as she was able to pull off an incredible armbar submission stoppage in the third round in what was a close fight up until that point. It was an incredible finish that earned her a $50,000 bonus for “Performance of the Night” on a card that was full of standout performances.

MMA legend Chael Sonnen believes that “every cornerman just lost their job” following Mike Perry’s decision win over Mickey Gall at UFC on ESPN 12. In controversial fashion, Perry decided not to use a traditional corner for his fight, instead just having his girlfriend in his corner in what was a UFC first. Other fighters have had their significant others in the corner before, including fighters like Matt Wiman and Montana De La Rosa, but this was the first instance of a fighter solely having their corner just be their significant other with no coaching staff to speak of.

Former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo is looking absolutely shredded for his upcoming bantamweight title fight against Petr Yan at UFC 251. UFC president Dana White gave Aldo the title shot over the other top contenders at 135lbs including Aljamain Sterling, and fans and media have been critical of that decision by the UFC. Despite being a legend of the sport, Aldo has lost his last two fights to Marlon Moraes and Alex Volkanovski, so for Aldo to get a crack at the belt over the other top contenders in the bantamweight division is certainly a controversial decision from the organization.

UFC heavyweight Tanner Boser sent a message to the UFC after being snubbed of a Performance of the Night bonus at UFC on ESPN 12. Boser scored an impressive first-round KO over former PFL heavyweight champion Philipe Lins on the preliminary card at UFC on ESPN 12. It was the first knockout win for the Canadian Boser in the UFC, and the win improved his record inside the Octagon to 2-1 as he looks to continue to move upwards and onwards in the UFC heavyweight division.

Poirier defeated Dan Hooker in the main event of UFC on ESPN 12 in one of the best MMA fights of the year. Fans were treated to an instant classic between the two warriors, who went toe-to-toe for 25 minutes, leaving everything they had in the cage. Although Hooker put up a valiant effort in defeat, Poirier was the man who emerged as the victor at the end of five rounds with scores of 48-47, 48-47, and 48-46 for a unanimous decision win.

UFC lightweight contender Dan Hooker released a video statement following his unanimous decision loss to Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC on ESPN 12. Hooker and Poirier put on one of the best fights of the year as both men fought tooth-and-nail for five rounds, with the judging scoring the bout 48-47, 48-47 and 48-46 in favor of Poirier after 25 minutes. It was an incredible fight between two of the best lightweights in the world, who both left every piece of themselves inside the Octagon on Saturday night.
