UFC Columbus is down to twelve bouts following last minute cancellation

Tonight’s UFC Columbus event is down to a total of twelve contests following a last minute fight cancellation. On Saturday afternoon, UFC officials announced that a scheduled heavyweight fight between Ilir Latifi and Aleksei Oleinik was no longer taking place this evening.

The Octagon invades Ohio for tonight’s UFC Columbus event, a thirteen-bout fight card headlined by Curtis Blaydes vs. Chris Daukaus. Blaydes (15-3 MMA) will be returning to action for the first time since September of 2021, where he earned a unanimous decision victory over Jairzinho Rozenstruik. That win was of course preceded by a nasty knockout loss to Derrick Lewis at UFC Vegas 19.

Alex Pereira wanted a major step up in competition and has been provided such in the form of a fight with Sean Strickland at UFC 277. Pereira (4-1 MMA), a former GLORY kickboxing champion, made his highly anticipated Octagon debut last November at UFC 268, where he scored a sensational knockout victory over Andreas Michailidis (see that here).

Nate Diaz makes formal request to be released by the UFC

Nate Diaz has made a formal request to Dana White and Hunter Campbell asking to be released by the UFC. Diaz (20-13 MMA) has not competed since UFC 263, where he suffered a unanimous decision loss to Leon Edwards in a welterweight bout. The Stockton native nearly finished the British fighter in round five of that contest, but wound up being handed the loss after being badly outpointed in the first four rounds of the fight.

Rafael Dos Anjos has fired back at Conor McGregor for suggesting he is not worthy of the BMF Title. Rafael Dos Anjos (31-13 MMA) has put together back-to-back wins, defeating Renato Carneiro (13-1 MMA) at UFC 272 in March of this year, and Paul Felder (17-6 MMA) at UFC Fight Night 182 in November 2020.

Could it be that Cejudo is adding himself to the list of fighters that are waiting in line for The Irishman to return to the Octagon. ‘Triple C’ (16-2 MMA) last fought in May of 2020 at UFC 249 defeating Dominick Cruz (24-3 MMA) by second round TKO to defend the bantamweight title. Following that bout, Cejudo announced his retirement from mixed martial arts, but has since indicated his wish to get back in the cage this year.

It was Ben Askren (19-2 MMA) vs Jorge Masvidal (35-16 MMA) at UFC 239 back in July of 2019. In the fastest and perhaps most violent knockout in the history of the UFC, it was ‘Gamebred’ who came out victorious at the 0:05 mark of the opening round.
