The trend of fellow fighters unloading on Conor McGregor for his recent MMA GOAT rankings continued this evening with Khabib Nurmagomedov. The promotions undefeated lightweight world champion, Nurmagomedov (28-0 MMA), had defeated McGregor by way of fourth round submission during their highly anticipated showdown at UFC 229 in October of 2018. However, ‘The Eagle’ was not named as a part of the Irishman’s current MMA GOAT list, yet somehow Conor’s name managed to take the #2 spot behind Anderson Silva.

Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, the father of UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov, has been put into a medically induced coma in Moscow. The news was confirmed by the champion’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz through ESPN on Tuesday. Abdelaziz confirmed that Abdulmanap was transported from his home in Dagestan to Moscow by airlift earlier this month. Khabib also recently revealed that his father underwent heart surgery stemming from complications related to a COVID-19 diagnosis.

However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the promotions reigning lightweight champion was forced to remain in his home country of Russia and thus could not compete. On Wednesday, several Russian media outlets reported that the elder Nurmagomedov had been flown from his native Dagestan to Moscow, where he was put into a medically-induced coma and was in “critical condition.”

Nurmagomedov was set to fight Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 in April but the card was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. After the dust settled and Nurmagomedov was stuck in Russa, the UFC was able to re-book the UFC card with Ferguson against Gaethje for the interim lightweight title.

Ferguson suffered a one-sided beatdown at the hands and legs of Justin Gaethje on Saturday night, as Gaethje turned on the volume late in the fifth round and earned a late TKO stoppage. The loss snapped the 12-fight win streak for Ferguson and all but guarantees we won’t see him fight Nurmagomedov anytime soon after the pair’s five previous encounters have been wiped out due to various factors.

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has issued a statement following Justin Gaehje’s TKO win over Tony Ferguson in the main event of UFC 249. Gaethje took Ferguson to the cleaners, picking him apart with big shots for nearly five full rounds until the referee stepped in and stopped the fight with just over a minute left in the final round. It was the biggest win of Gaethje’s UFC career to date and he now owns the interim UFC lightweight title. That means he has earned himself a chance to unify the belt against Nurmagomedov later this year.

Nurmagomedov, the undisputed UFC lightweight champ, was originally expected to defend his title against Tony Ferguson on April 18. Unfortunately, Nurmagomedov ultimately wound up getting stuck in his native Russia due to travel restrictions stemming from the coronavirus pandemic. The UFC then called upon Justin Gaethje to step in against Ferguson in an interim title fight, which will go down in a rescheduled UFC 249 card on May 9.
