Weili Zhang likely to defend title against Rose Namajunas in first quarter of 2021, says coach

Pedro Jordao, one of the coaches behind UFC strawweight champion Weili Zhang, says his pupil is likely to defend her title against Rose Namajunas in early 2021. “We’ll see how things go with this virus,” Jordao told MMA Fighting, laying out the timeframe for a long rumored fight between Zhang and Namajunas. “But I think (the fight) will probably be in the first quarter. … We’re training for a while here. It appears that her next fight will be against Rose, but nothing is set yet. Everything indicates that’s the plan — and it makes sense, everybody knows that.”

Daniel Cormier isn’t impressed by how Jon Jones comported himself after Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated Justin Gaethje at UFC 254. Heading into that card, Jones and Nurmagomedov had long stood out as the top two pound-for-pound fighters in the UFC, with Jones holding the No. 1 spot in the rankings and Nurmagomedov sitting at No. 2. After Nurmagomedov defeated Gaethje by submission in the UFC 254 main event, however, he was promoted to the No. 1 spot—and Jones was not happy about that.

According to a recent report, it’s looking unlikely that Tony Ferguson will be joining the UFC 256 card next month. Ferguson, who hasn’t fought since his devastating loss to Justin Gaethje earlier this year, wants to put himself back in position for a shot at the UFC Lightweight Championship. In order to do that, however, he needs to remain active – and the fact that he’s been calling for a fight against Michael Chandler before the end of 2020 seems to indicate he’s ready to go.

Jones vacated the 205lbs belt back in the summer with the intention of moving up a weight class to heavyweight. So far, he hasn’t made the move up in weight official as his next fight hasn’t been announced yet. While Jones remains on the sidelines, one of his biggest rivals in the game in Israel Adesanya is poised to move up to 205lbs to take on the new champion Jan Blachowicz in 2021. Mike Perry will have two people in his corner for his UFC 255 fight against Tim Means. When Perry fought Mickey Gall earlier this year, the only person in his corner was his girlfriend, Latory Gonzalez. Then, in the lead up to his return at UFC 255, “Platinum” said he planned on auctioning off his corner spots and Darren Till showed interest. The middleweight contender even said he would pay five thousand dollars to be in his corner.

Jon Jones has continued to trash his longtime rival, Daniel Cormier. For years now, Jones and Cormier have had a feud. They first fight at UFC 182 with Jones winning by decision. They then had their rematch at UFC 214 with “Bones” winning by KO, however, the fight was overturned to a no-contest due to him being flagged by USADA.
