Diaz leaving the promotion once he hits free agency was considered such a certainty that UFC brass decided to match him up against Khamzat Chimaev in what many people are calling a lopsided mismatch. In a new in-depth interview with ESPN’s Marc Raimondi, Diaz discussed his reasons for leaving and the UFC’s attempt to bury him on the way out.

UFC 279 is set up to be Khamzat Chimaev’s big coming out party. The UFC has put him up against one of their biggest stars in Nate Diaz, and it’s a match-up seemingly designed to make Chimaev look like a monster. He’s much bigger than Diaz, he’s top ranked while Diaz is unranked, and Chimaev has a history of smeshing lesser opponents in minutes without taking any damage whatsoever. Nate Diaz is a +700 dog to Chimaev’s -1100 favorite, with everyone underestimating Diaz’s ability to win. So it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to hear Chimaev is doing the same. He’s certainly talking like he expects to walk through the Stockton fighter, whose record holds more than his fair share of major upsets.

Abus Magomedov finally made his UFC debut and made quick work of Dustin Stoltzfus at UFC Paris. Magomedov hadn’t fought since December of 2020 in KSW and after that, he was signed to the UFC. He was booked to face Gerald Meerschaert, Aliaskhab Khizriev, and Makhmud Muradov but for different reasons, it never came to fruition. He finally made his debut at UFC Paris nearly two years after his last fight and for Magomedov, he was ready to finally fight again.

Khamzat Chimaev and Kevin Holland and their teams continued to bicker at one another following the press conference being canceled. Before the press conference was set to begin, Dana White said “all hell broke loose” and there was a scuffle. The UFC boss was then forced to cancel the event, and he gave more details about it as he said Chimaev and Holland went at it followed by Diaz’s team being part of it.

Khamzat Chimaev has taken to social media after reportedly push kicking Kevin Holland in the chest backstage at the UFC 279 press conference. The incident, which caused the press conference to be cancelled entirely, occurred moments after Kevin Holland and his upcoming opponent Daniel Rodriguez exited the stage for other fighters to come on.

Dana White was forced to cancel the UFC 279 press conference on Thursday. The event was scheduled to take place at 4 p.m. local time but was running nearly 30 minutes late with no fighters in sight. White then took the podium and announced it was a ‘shit show’ backstage and instead of doing the press conference at once, the fighters would be brought out in pairs.

Edwards became the new welterweight champion at UFC 278 as he scored a fifth-round head kick KO over Kamaru Usman in a massive comeback win. Although it appears Edwards and Usman will have their trilogy match sometime next year, if Chimaev defeats Nate Diaz at UFC 279, he appears to be next in line but he doesn’t expect Edwards to want the fight.

Kevin Holland is very familiar with Khamzat Chimaev’s habit of getting in the faces of UFC athletes on fight week. Back in September of 2020, Chimaev accosted him at the UFC fighter hotel, getting physical with ‘Trailblazer’ over an Instagram comment about wearing masks. “He only does this extra wannabe street s*** when the media is around,” Holland said during UFC 279 media day interviews. “Other than that, he doesn’t do it. When you guys aren’t around, he wants to do fist bumps and he wants to be your best friend. When you guys are around, he’s like, I’m going to rip your head off! You ain’t ripping s*** off dog, you just want a paycheck like the rest of these guys around here.”
