Leon Edwards vs. Khamzat Chimaev headlines UFC event on December 19

A highly-anticipated welterweight bout between Leon Edwards and Khamzat Chimaev is set to headline a UFC event on December 19 in Las Vegas. As replayed by ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, UFC president Dana White appeared on the Jim Rome show on Friday and made the announcement that the Edwards vs. Chimaev fight is a done deal. The fight will reportedly take place at 170lbs at a UFC Fight Night card on December 19 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. It will be a five-round headliner.

Leon Edwards reportedly turned down multiple opponents before he was removed from the UFC rankings. Edwards hasn’t fought since July of last year when he defeated Rafael dos Anjos by decision. Since then, he was scheduled to fight Tyron Woodley in March. However, the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Edwards was then locked down in England and couldn’t train properly so he turned down multiple fights.

With Edwards needing a fight against a top-five opponent and with Masvidal coming off of a title fight loss to champion Kamaru Usman, a fight between Edwards and Masvidal seems like it would make a lot of sense right now. But according to Edwards, the UFC tried to book this fight and Masvidal is the one who said no.

Covington defeated Woodley via fifth-round stoppage in a lopsided beating in the main event of Saturday’s UFC Vegas 11 event. He has also responded to Leon Edwards’ hopes of getting the next shot at UFC welterweight title. Burns has been bulldozing his way through the division and was expected to put his skills the test against Usman at UFC 251. However, Burns tested posted for COVID-19 and was forced out of the championship fight that took place on Fight Island.
