Jared Cannonier: Fight with Yoel Romero 'puts me right up there' in middleweight title picture

Jared Cannonier went from rising middleweight fighter on the UFC roster to world title contender in just under six minutes last month at UFC Copenhagen. After defeating Jack Hermansson, Cannonier sees himself mixing things up with the likes of Yoel Romero, Kelvin Gastelum, Darren Till, or anyone blocking his path to a title shot. “Killa Gorilla” finished Hermansson via second-round TKO in the main event of the UFC’s trip to Denmark. While it was one of the biggest wins of his career — snapping the four-fight winning streak of Hermansson — Cannonier is already back to normal life as Dad.

The official UFC rankings have been updated in the wake of last weekend’s action-packed UFC Copenhagen card, and as expected, there have been some interesting changes. Most notably, main event winner Jared Cannonier has rocketed up the middleweight rankings on the strength of his first-round drubbing of Jack Hermansson. He’s now settled at No. 5 in the division, while Hermansson has stumbled to No. 6.

With his knockout win over Jack Hermansson in the main event of UFC Copenhagen, Cannonier is closing in on a title shot. He’s likely still behind fellow contender Paulo Costa in the title pecking order, but that’s still a great spot for “The Killa Gorilla” to be in. The Swedish warrior, Jack Hermansson, faced his opponent in the capital city of Denmark: Copenhagen. ‘The Joker’ trains out of Norway at Front Line Academy and hadn’t lost since his 2017 bout against the recent light heavyweight title challenger, Thiago Santos. Hermansson entered the Octagon on a four-fight win streak and was coming off an upset win against ‘Jacare’ Souza in April 2019.

Jared Cannonier is set for his first UFC main event as he takes on Jack Hermansson at UFC Copenhagen. Cannonier is 2-0 since dropping down to middleweight win TKO wins over David Branch at UFC 230 and Anderson Silva at UFC 237. Although he has been on a roll, so too, has Hermansson. He submitted Branch in under a minute, then beat Jacare Souza by decision laying the foundation for this fight with Cannonier. Cannonier did not hesitate to accept this fight even with how good Hermansson has looked as of late.

UFC 237 went down last night from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which saw a new strawweight champion be crowned. Jessica Andrade knocked out Rose Namajunas with a slam which was followed up by punches. Meanwhile, in the co-main event, Jared Cannonier TKO’d Anderson Silva via leg kicks in the first round after attacking his lead leg the entire round. Elsewhere on the main card, Alexander Volkanovski showed why he is the top contender in the featherweight division as he grinded out a decision win over Jose Aldo.

At UFC 230 Jared Cannonier stepped in on short notice to face top 10 middleweight David Branch. It would be Cannonier’s toughest fight to date. Making it even harder was the fact that it was Cannonier’s middleweight debut and he was riding a two-fight losing streak. To beat Branch by knockout in the second round and look as good as Cannonier did was impressive, to say the least. Although the win was impressive, it was an important win for Cannonier who did not want to go on a three-fight losing streak.
