VIDEO | Daniel Cormier Not Sweating 'Junior Varsity' Volkan Oezdemir

Justin Golightly - January 16, 2018

Someone bring Daniel Cormier some swishy pants and a whistle. If there is an epitome of a wrestling coach, it’s the UFC light heavyweight champion with his shirt tucked tight into his work out pants. Throughout his career, he’s dropped iconic lines that’d be at home in any high school or college gym: ‘Ineligible for competition,’ and ‘get your academics in order’ to just name a few. Now, he’s dropped yet another iconic speech for UFC 220. Cormier wants to know how junior varsity Volkan Oezdemir stands a shot at him when the varsity crew couldn’t get it done. “There’s varsity and there’s JV. Have you ever heard of that? Henri Hooft is a great guy. Greg Jones is a fantastic guy. I don’t know who the jiu-jitsu coach is down there, they’re all fantastic guys. They had a wrestle-off, Anthony [Johnson] whipped Volkan [Oezdemir], so Volkan became a training partner. He went to get beat up. They sent the A-Guy in there, he got whipped. They built him back up, he came back in there again and he got whipped. Now he’s gone. So now they’re going to bring the JV guy.”

Daniel Cormier Promises to Ruin the Fan's Love of the Power Punchers

Justin Golightly - January 13, 2018

The main and the co-main event of UFC 220 in Boston have a lot in common. Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier are both champions who have passed the tests of many incredible threats. The names in their win columns are intimidating to say the least. They’ll be up against young talent that boast terrifying knockout power that fans love. Daniel Cormier is here to remind you that there is more to this game than just punching someone very hard. Anthony Johnson was one of the most feared hitters in the UFC light heavyweight division, but in the end it didn’t allow him to beat Cormier. “I think people fall in love with power punchers. I believe it’s just because they finish the fights. They finish fights in no time. The fight is going and all of a sudden it’s over. You got guys like [Anthony] ‘Rumble’ [Johnson] who was knocking everybody out. Then you have guys like Volkan [Oezdemir], they can knock everybody out and people fall in love with them.”

Daniel Cormier Verbally KOed Volkan Oezdemir With His Own Photo

Justin Golightly - January 12, 2018

There is a UFC card in Missouri this Sunday, but the big UFC kick-off to 2018 is just a week away now. UFC 220 goes down in Boston with Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier both defending their titles against young hard-hitting hype machines. As we get closer to the event, tensions get higher and there’s bound to be some verbal jabs before the physical ones. Volkan Oezdemir went straight from a poke to an all-out haymaker to try and get underneath Cormier’s skin, but the UFC light heavyweight champion turned it right back on him. Savage post @volkan_oezdemir but since no one knows or follows you I’ll send it out to the public. 3000 likes for such a good post seems like a waste. quick point tho you’re no Jon Jones and I’m no jimmy Manuwa. And I’m a lot better than Kelly Amunson #tapmachine #bum #ufc220 pic.twitter.com/pvGpoHLE2F

Daniel Cormier Warns Volkan Oezdemir That He's in Over His Head

Justin Golightly - January 11, 2018

We’re just over a week away from two huge title fights in Boston for UFC 220. In a way, the main and co-main events are mirror images of each other. Two hyped newcomers in Volkan Oezdemir and Francis Ngannou with one-punch knockout power, against champions seemingly on a completely different level than their competition. Daniel Cormier keeps reminding Oezdemir of that fact in the lead-up to their big showdown. Against Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson and before that against the top heavyweights in the world, Cormier has felt that power and has never been taken out by it. “It’s crazy that this kid thinks he can knock me out with one punch. What happens when it doesn’t happen? You will all see next Saturday. I’ll stand with this kid and still beat him. There are levels to this game and this guy ain’t on the level. Volkan Oezdemir, you have done well but now you’re in over your head. Sharpening my tools with Javier Mendez. I am who I am because of who I am. Hard work and commitment is something I’ve always had in spades. I can’t wait to show you what we have been cooking up. We are AKA. Down goes Volkan.” — Daniel Cormier via his Instagram.

Daniel Cormier: "I'm OK with the way that everything went down."

Drake Riggs - December 26, 2017

The current Light Heavyweight king has gone by one name since May of 2015 and that name is Daniel Cormier. Since he defeated Anthony “Rumble” Johnson at UFC 187 to become the champion, Cormier has won three fights accompanied by one no contest. That no contest coming in his last outing when he took on bitter rival Jon Jones in a highly anticipated rematch that headlined UFC 214. The fight’s initial result was a third-round knockout loss for the champion, Cormier. But not too soon after the night of the event, Jones was busted for steroids and the result was overturned. After a recent interview with FloCombat, Cormier opened up a bit more about his feelings on the fight among other things.

Daniel Cormier Responds to Haters With His Own Crying Photo

Justin Golightly - December 23, 2017

Daniel Cormier has had his fair share of trials and tribulations. During a career of fighting between two weight classes, Jon Jones is the only man to ever beat him. The first time, he cried in the arms of Cain Velasquez. The second time, he wept openly in the Octagon. On top of all of that, the light heavyweight belt has been stripped from Jones’ waist twice and given back to Cormier. Those are things that some people on the internet just can’t let go despite it being no fault on DC’s part. The trolling doesn’t bother Daniel Cormier though, who responded to it all yesterday with a crying photo of his own. “People putting the photo of me crying don’t realize it’s okay lol. I been doing this crying since I was a kid lol. Here’s another one for y’all this is me crying on the awards stand at the junior nationals after losing in the finals. What can I say. I hate losing.” — Daniel Cormier via his official Instagram.

Daniel Cormier Would Ask Special Permission to Fight Stipe Miocic

Justin Golightly - December 23, 2017

Francis Ngannou and Stipe Miocic will be decided who is the baddest man on the planet at UFC Boston, but if Daniel Cormier successfully defends his light heavyweight belt on the same card, he could move up and test that title as well. He was asked about going back to heavyweight for a giant fight to close out his career in a recent interview and said it’d be ‘the most amazing thing in the world.’ Not only that, but it seems like he’s thought about it a lot. His coach Javier Mendez opened up about the idea and thinks it could happen, with Cain Velasquez’s permission that is. “Yeah, [Daniel Cormier moving up to fight for the heavyweight title is] a fun theory too and it could be a realistic theory, and this is how it would work out if it did happen, okay. Cain [Velasquez] would talk to DC or DC would go to Cain, he’d go, ‘Hey, Cain, I wanna fight for the title against Stipe, do you have a problem for me going that one shot?’ And if Cain says yes, which I’m sure if that’s what they agreed on, then yeah, that would happen. That’s not far-fetched. It really isn’t, because that could be something that could happen. But it would be between DC and Cain, they would make that decision jointly together.”

The event also features another title fight, that being in Cormier’s former weight class of Heavyweight. Justin Golightly - December 6, 2017

Things have been relatively quiet in the light heavyweight division for a little while now, but now we officially have Daniel Cormier defending his title against Volkan Oezdemir early next year in Boston. Aside from Ovince Saint Preux’s fight with Ilir Latifi at UFC Charlotte and Misha Cirkunov’s scrap with Glover Teixeira at UFC Winnipeg, we don’t have any big Top 10 match-ups in the division booked. That’s all about to change soon. After a successful surgery last month, Alexander Gustafsson is back to training for his comeback. Feels good to be back at the @allstarsgymsweden after the surgery. Time to get to work and come back stronger than ever in 2018!

BREAKING | Daniel Cormier Defends His Title Against Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 220

Justin Golightly - November 29, 2017

Ever since Volkan Oezdemir won a social media poll put on by Daniel Cormier, he’s been slated to get the UFC light heavyweight title shot. It was teased and talked about until finally it was reported to be in the works for UFC 220 by MMA Kings. Everything seemed like it was set until Oezdemir had an altercation at a bar that seemed to put everything in jeopardy. Dana White assured us that the plan was to keep on trucking with the event as planned and it looked like everything worked out. Just a few minutes ago on UFC Tonight, Daniel Cormier opened up the broadcast with the official announcement.

Daniel Cormier Releases a Statement on the Volkan Oezdemir Situation

Justin Golightly - November 21, 2017

It’s common knowledge now that Daniel Cormier was slated to defend his UFC light heavyweight title against Volkan Oezdemir. There was no official announcement, but the two have both let it slip that UFC 220 in Boston was going to be the date. That was, until an altercation at a bar ended up putting everything in jeopardy for the rising contender. Obviously, this has to hit close to home for Cormier, who opened up about the situation in a recent interview. He’s also ready and willing to defend against anyone else if Oezdemir’s chance has to be delayed. “It’s tough to be going through this type of thing, especially at this time when you’re on the cusp of your biggest moment of your career. I don’t know what happened. You’ve got to not be doing things that are wrong or put yourself in these situations where stuff can go sideways. You’ve got to try to stay out of those positions. […] Maybe it was self-defense but because he is who is is, it’s much worse because he has the ability to sleep dudes that are trying to hit him. You never know what’s happening but even these run-ins, they’re really unneeded, especially when you’re a young guy as Volkan is and you’re on the cusp of something so big for the first time in your career.”

VIDEO | Daniel Cormier Lands His First Fight Hype Video in Joe Rogan's Place

Justin Golightly - October 25, 2017

For years, we’ve watch Joe Rogans big veiny head scream at us in video packages before UFC fight cards, hyping us up for the match-ups. It’s become a nostalgic part of the UFC experience, just like that “Face the Pain” song. This time though, Joe Rogan has been swapped out for none other than the UFC light heavyweight champion, Daniel Cormier. He’s been doing his commentary and desk gigs long enough to be put into the spotlight and seems pretty pumped about it. He even got some pointers from Rogan himself. I’ve seen these for years and now to get to do a fight preview is awesome. When you pay attention you will be surprised how much you can learn. Thanks @joerogan for all the help. Daniel Cormier and Joe Rogan catch criticism for biased commentary, Cormier apologizes

Tom Taylor - October 16, 2017

Earlier this month, on the undercard of UFC 216, Cody Stamann and Tom Duquesnoy collided in a clash of bantamweight prospects. Though both fighters possessed identical 15-1 professional records, many felt that the Octagon-side commentary of Daniel Cormier and Joe Rogan leaned a little too far in favor of the highly-hyped Frenchman Duquesnoy. Stamann, who ended up winning the fight by decision, shared this opinion when he finally had a chance to listen to the fight’s commentary.
