In the buildup to and fallout of their two fights, Daniel Cormier and Anthony “Rumble” Johnson always kept things pretty civil. It’s for this reason that the recent heat between them, which began when Cormier scolded Rumble for his interactions with Jon Jones, came as such a surprise. “Rumble Johnson and I have always been respectful with each other, but something happened at UFC 214 that has forever made me change the way I’m going to interact with Anthony Johnson,” Cormier said on a recent episode of podcast Talk and Talker. “So, I walk into the back of the weigh-ins for UFC 214, and there’s Rumble. And I go up to Rumble and he says ‘what’s up DC? You look good.’ Give him a hug, and I say ‘hey man, I hope you’re enjoying your retirement. You seem happy. I wish you nothing but continued success’, and I go about my business — as much as you’d expect two guys who have competed and ave respect for each other would interact. Then in walks Jon Jones, and I expect him to — a guy he was supposed to fight, and may at some point still fight — give him the same type of conversation and kind of keep it moving, as a man. But Jon walks in, they give each other the shake and the hug, and they talk a little bit. And the conversation seems like Anthony is almost giving him advice … like pre-fight stuff.”

A couple of weeks ago, Daniel Cormier tallied up votes that he got from Twitter and decided it was Volkan Oezdemir who should get the next title shot. Of course, Oezdemir accepted the gesture in ‘no time’ flat. Even though Cormier used the fans own comments to decide his opponent, there was still criticism of why Alexander Gustafsson didn’t get another shot at the belt. Cormier took to his Talk and Talker podcast to tell the world simply, that it’s just business. “It was me [who decided to do the voting polls]. I was like man, let’s see where the interest is. Look, there are a lot of people that want to see me fight Alexander Gustafsson. And I would fight Alexander again. Y’know, he’s a tough guy. Another guy who I have a tremendous amount of respect for. But it’s a fight we’ve seen before. Truth of the matter is, that fight with Alex in all the fights that I’ve done — the two [Jon] Jones’ fights that have done tremendous at the box office, the pay-per-views. The Anderson Silva fight obviously at UFC 200 did amazing pay-per-views. The two Rumble [Johnson] fights did really well pay-per-view wise. The only fight that I’ve truly, truly, struggled with was Gustafsson.”

UFC 216 is set to take place this weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada. Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee are featured in the main event of the evening as they will fight for the UFC interim lightweight title. In the co-main event of the evening, there is a chance history will be made by the current number 1 UFC ranked pound-for-pound fighter, Demetrious Johnson. “Mighty Mouse” will look to defend his UFC flyweight title for the 11th time against Ray Borg. Johnson is currently tied with former middleweight champion Anderson Silva for most consecutive title defenses in UFC history at 10 a piece and Johnson will look to set the new record on Saturday night.

Jon Jones is gone for the time being, Daniel Cormier has been handed the UFC light heavyweight belt again, and Anthony “Rumble” Johnson is retired (for now). The division is both old and new; clean yet warped. On the supposed verge of Johnson’s return to a heavier division, Cormier made some comments about Johnson’s super quick comeback. The power of the fans may have proven to be even more influential than they ever thought before. Just earlier today, Daniel Cormier addressed Twitter about their results when he asked who he should fight next. ‘No Time’ Volkan Oezdemir beat out light heavyweight number one contender Alexander Gustafsson as the fighter they want to see challenge Cormier for the UFC title. The champ replied to Oezdemir personally to let him know he has been chose. Last Friday, Daniel Cormier took to Twitter not to cause a beef or talk trash to a potential opponent, he did something different. The UFC light heavyweight champ put it to a vote, to let the fans decide who he should defend the belt against. At the time, it seemed nothing more than a fun gauge of interest, but Cormier is taking this to the next level. The fans decided that Volkan Oezdemir has earned the next title shot and so Cormier agrees. He tweeted at Oezdemir personally today to begin negotiations on a potential date for their fight.

Daniel Cormier is taking a break after a roller coaster ride of chaos after losing to Jon Jones at UFC 214, then getting back his UFC light heavyweight title only a little while later. He’s going to take a much-needed rest for at least six months, before coming back to defend his belt against Alexander Gustafsson or Volkan Oezdemir. Or, who knows? However, it’s another fighter that has just gotten Cormier’s attention again: Former opponent Frank Mir.

After all Daniel Cormier has been through, he needs a break. He suffered a devastating loss to Jon Jones back at UFC 214, then had to go through another controversy involving his opponent, once again going through a roller coaster of ups and downs. However, after being re-crowned as the new/old UFC light heavyweight champion, he’s starting to think about who he’ll have to defend against. He just took to Twitter not too long ago answering some questions from fans, and says if it is Volkan Oezdemir we want, then Volkan Oezdemir we’ll get.

Daniel Cormier was not happy when he was knocked out by Jon Jones at UFC 214. This was immediately clear, as he shed tears in his ill-advised post-fight interview with Octagon commentator Joe Rogan. While sadness and disappointment were the first emotions to course through Cormier’s body after this loss, these emotions eventually gave way to anger. Speaking on the latest edition of The MMA Hour, Cormier explained that his anger was so severe that he nearly threw his UFC titles in the garbage.

Just when we thought the saga between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones had come to an end, there was another twist thrown into the mix. Following the outcome of their UFC 214 UFC light heavyweight title fight where Jones became the first opponent to KO and finish Cormier, Jones was flagged for the second time by USADA for a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation. Both Jones’ A and B samples tested positive for the anabolic steroid Turinabol and the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) overturned Jones’ win to a no-contest. With that, Cormier said that UFC President Dana White told him that he would also be reinstated as the UFC light heavyweight champion.

After losing his title to Jon Jones, Daniel Cormier was unfortunately dragged through another situation involving his opponent being flagged for an anti-doping violation. The title was removed from his waist, placed on Jones’, now it’s been taken away and given right back. When he became champion by beating Anthony Johnson, some fans didn’t accept Cormier as the true champion. Now, Cormier finds himself back in the same predicament. On the record books, it’s like the fight never happened. However, that doesn’t change the fact that it happened for Daniel Cormier. “The people around me, my friends, they tell me that nothing has changed because if [Jon Jones] was not fighting completely clean, then there was no fight. But I was there. I fought. In my mind, I lost a competition, but if it was an unfair competition — I shouldn’t have been in it. It’s a hard question. I guess I do feel like the champion, because I know I was the champion before all this happened. I don’t know. It’s a difficult question to ask someone like me. My manager, my wife, my coaches — it’s easy for them to answer. For me, it’s a tough question.”

Daniel Cormier stated earlier this week on UFC Tonight that Dana White told him that he would be reinstated as the UFC light heavyweight champion. The news comes following the result of Jon Jones’ positive B sample and the California Athletic Commission overturning Jones’ initial UFC 214 KO win over Cormier to a no-contest result. Cormier has mostly steered clear of laying judgement on jones but did have some words for his rival while announcing the news of being reinstated as the champion. However, on Friday, the UFC star released a very classy statement regarding Jones and his situation on social media.

Of course, he could change his mind and keep boxing, or just shrug it all off and stay in Ibiza admiring gigantic boats. What is predictable, is how big a third fight with Nate Diaz could be. Daniel Cormier has been reinstated as the UFC light heavyweight champion and Jon Jones can no longer be found on the latest official UFC rankings. All of this comes as a result of Jones’ B sample coming out with the same results as his A sample from after the UFC 214 weigh-ins, which was a positive test result for the anabolic steroid Turinabol. Jones, however, is still due the appropriate adjudication of his case with USADA.

Earlier this week, we learned that Jon Jones’ B sample confirmed that he had indeed ingested the banned substance Turinabol in advance of his UFC 214 light heavyweight title fight with Daniel Cormier. Yesterday, the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) overturned Jones’ UFC 214 knockout win over Daniel Cormier, rendering it a no contest. With this development, the UFC moved to strip Jones of the light heavyweight title, and reinstate Cormier as the champion. Needless to say, things have been crazy. The latest UFC rankings, updated Wednesday, reflect this craziness, as Jones has been ejected from both the light heavyweight and pound-for-pound rankings. Cormier, meanwhile, has been elevated to a bizarre “0” ranking at light heavyweight, reflecting that fact that’s he’s no longer simply the number-one-contender, but apparently not the champion either…
