Daniel Cormier Talked to Stipe Miocic to Make Sure Their Money Was Right

Justin Golightly - January 31, 2018

It’s the fight everyone is talking about right now. In June, Daniel Cormier will challenge Stipe Miocic for the UFC heavyweight title. It’s out of nowhere, it’s insane, and we get a full season of The Ultimate Fighter for a build-up. Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic isn’t just a fight between two of the best champions ever in the sport, it’s between two pretty solid dudes. If you needed anymore proof to that statement, just check out the conversation with Miocic that Cormier revealed that had Miocic’s wife screaming DC’s praises in the background. “I did speak with [Stipe Miocic before the fight was done]. I spoke with Stipe, I called Stipe. Obviously, you know, great guy, I got to spend some time with him, fantastic champion, just a pillar of his community. I can’t say enough good things about Stipe Miocic. With that being said, I told Stipe for $500,000, I’m not fighting Stipe Miocic. I threw out a big number and said for that number, I’m fighting Stipe Miocic. He goes, ‘I f-cking love you.’ That’s what he said. I said for the right numbers we need to do this. His wife is in the back going, ‘Yes, DC!'”

UFC 220 Salaries: Miocic, Ngannou, Cormier and Oezdemir all pocket massive checks

Tom Taylor - January 31, 2018

On January 20, the UFC returned to Boston with UFC 220, a massive pay-per-view that featured title fights at both heavyweight and light heavyweight. In the main event, UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic defended his title by outworking dangerous challenger Francis Ngannou to a unanimous decision, derailing one of MMA’s biggest hype trains in the process.

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier’s next fight will not occur in the light heavyweight division, but at heavyweight, where his career began. His opponent in this return to the heavyweight division will be UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic. The pair will battle in the main event of UFC 226 this July. While news that Cormier will fight Miocic was met with widespread excitement, it didn’t go over particularly well with Alexander Gustafsson, the top contender in the light heavyweight division, who feels he’s been deprived of the light heavyweight title shot he’s earned.

Daniel Cormier Happy for Chael Sonnen, Excited for the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix

Drake Riggs - January 30, 2018

UFC Light Heavyweight champion, Daniel Cormier is no stranger to a good ol’ Heavyweight tournament. Prior to Cormier’s current Light Heavyweight run, he was an undefeated Heavyweight and a Grand Prix champion himself as he won the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix as an alternate in 2012. Cormier defeated the likes of Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva and Josh Barnett to win the tournament.

Daniel Cormier: a win over Miocic could make me ‘the greatest fighter of all time’

Tom Taylor - January 30, 2018

This July 7, in the midst of this year’s International Fight Week, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will return to his former haunts – the heavyweight division – where he’ll take on reigning champ Stipe Miocic in an effort to become a two-division champ. If Cormier is able to accomplish this momentous task, he believes he deserves to be in the running for the greatest of all time title. “I win this fight July 7, I’m the greatest fighter of all time,” Cormier said on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “I’ve done something that was unheard of and that’s what I’ve always chased. I’ve always chased that. I chased it in the fights with [Jon] Jones because even regardless of the belts, I would always say, ‘Once I beat Jones, I will be the greatest fighter of all time.’ So I believe that once I do this, something that was so crazy that no one even has attempted it, I feel like I’m in the conversation for the best fighter of all time.” “When I think of a fight against Stipe, it’s a very tough fight and it’s a very difficult mountain for me to climb,” Cormier added. “But the reality was I’ve always talked about competition and legacy and when you think about legacy, if I’m able to pull this off, there’s no denying what I have meant to this sport and what I will leave behind whenever I’m done.”

Stipe Miocic Opens Up as a Favorite Against Daniel Cormier Ahead of UFC 226

Justin Golightly - January 27, 2018

If you happened to be away from the internet and felt the ground shaking last night, it was probably just the most ridiculous fight announcement you’ve ever heard. The match-up will no doubt bring a lot of attention and gamblers throwing their money around. The opening odds courtesy of Best Fight Odds have already been put up and it’s a lot closer than you think. Cormier opened as a slight underdog at +170, while Miocic sits at -215.

Alexander Gustafsson is Pissed About Daniel Cormier's Superfight

Justin Golightly - January 27, 2018

It’s true. Oh, it’s true. Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic are going to fight and the world will probably never be the same. Despite how earth-shatteringly insane the match-up is, some people somehow still aren’t in support of it. In all things, especially in MMA, you can’t please everyone even with the most legendary of match-ups. One of those people who aren’t happy, is former UFC light heavyweight challenger Alexander Gustafsson. “Daniel Cormier is fighting Stipe [Miocic]? Well, stop running and fight me. Don’t even think about giving the fight to anyone else. I have been quiet. I had a tough time after my last fight (injury etc.) but I’m next in line and the [Cormier] fight is mine. Come on, let’s have a another dance for the fans, UFC.” — Alexander Gustafsson via his official Facebook.

Cain Velasquez Issues a Very Interesting Statement on Daniel Cormier Fighting Stipe Miocic

Justin Golightly - January 27, 2018

In case you haven’t heard the news, maybe you need to sit down. UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is going to challenge Stipe Miocic for his UFC heavyweight belt in July after they coach a season of The Ultimate Fighter. We aren’t kidding. This is really happening. While this is insane, Cormier’s teammate Cain Velasquez may be hinting at something even crazier. Even the UFC’s official Twitter account was confused at what was going on. Either that, or they’re cleverly stirring the speculation pot. Like always, I’m gonna be in the gym everyday to help my brother @dc_mma become the next heavyweight champ at #UFC226. Once he wins, things could get interesting. #AndNew #WeAreAKA #GonnaGetMyBeltBack

VIDEO | Daniel Cormier is Only Fighting Three More Times Before He Retires

Justin Golightly - January 23, 2018

After a dominant performance against Volkan Oezdemir, Daniel Cormier let everyone know that they wouldn’t see him too much longer. March 20th next year, Cormier will turn 40-years old and has decided to retire. Of course, as we all know, minds can always change especially when it comes to MMA retirements, but it seems like the current UFC light heavyweight champion is serious. He opened up more about his intentions today and would like to have three fights before he finally walks away from the sport. “I’ve got a little break in my thumb and also some ligament damage. I don’t like to do surgery, so I’m going to try and put off the surgery. […] If it’s starting to heal, I’m not going to do the surgery, I’m going to some PRP (Platelet-rich plasma). I prefer to not go under the knife. I would rather just always try to do the alternative so as not to have too much time off. There was a break in there and also a torn ligament in my wrist, so that’s why I was having so many issues after the fight. It just takes longer. I want to try to not have surgery. […] I don’t really have the time to waste.”

Last weekend, in the co-main event of UFC 220, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier defended his title with a second-round TKO of Volkan Oezdemir. Russell Sai - January 20, 2018

Daniel Cormier showed the world why he is the UFC light heavyweight champion on Saturday night in Boston at UFC 220. “DC” was matched up against the quickly rising star Volkan Oezdemir, who went into the title fight unbeaten in the UFC. Cormier was able to walk through an early offensive attack from “No Time” in the early part of the first round and then turned things up as the round came to and end. Cormier ended up finishing Oezdemir in the second round by TKO.

Tom Taylor - January 20, 2018

In the co-main event of UFC 220, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier attempted to defend his title opposite Swiss knockout artist Volkan “No Time” Oezdemir. Though Oezdemir came out swinging, and seemed to frustrate the champ with his range and size, Cormier showed no fear, wading into a firefight with his stone-fisted challenger, and remarkably, wobbling him with a punch. From there, the champ turned to his world-class wrestling, executing a takedown, and threatening with a deep rear-naked choke in the final seconds of the round.

VIDEO | Volkan Oezdemir Doesn't Understand the Logic of Daniel Cormier

Justin Golightly - January 20, 2018

Volkan Oezdemir will be one half of the crew who will try to dethrone the UFC champions tonight and prove that they belong at the very top of the heap in their division. Many people are counting them both out, including their opponents of course. Al that aside, Oezdemir believes that not only did Daniel Cormier commit a crucial error in promoting their UFC 220 light heavyweight title clash, but that all of the pressure is on him instead of the challenger. “I just don’t understand the logic here. So, [Daniel Cormier]’s coming off a loss. He’s using this fight to gain back his popularity, right? He has a stink on his shoulder. He needs this fight to bring something to his legacy and the only thing he does is try to make me look bad. It doesn’t look good on him, you know? What does he do if he gets a win on me? It’s nothing. His legacy is not going to get back. This is the fight where he needs it. He needs the win and that’s why there is so much pressure on him. So, the win that he needs is gonna be discredited. You know, that’s kind of stupid. I just don’t understand the logic in here.”

Daniel Cormier recounts fight week run-in with Volkan Oezdemir and his "little minions"

Tom Taylor - January 18, 2018

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier endures a very tough cut down to his division’s 205-pound limit, and that’s no secret. If you’ve seen any footage of the champ in the immediate lead-up to his Saturday night showdown with Volkan Oezdemir, it’s clear that this present weight cut is no exception. While he probably has it well under control, he certainly looks a little rough. Apparently, Oezdemir hasn’t hesitated to let Cormier know that he looks a somewhat depleted. Cormier detailed a quick run-in with Oezdemir and his “minions” in a Thursday afternoon Instagram post.
