In the end, it was Blaydes who got the job done as he TKO’d the Brazilian in the second round with a bevy of punches. The most surprising part was that Blaydes didn’t even have to use his wrestling to get the job done.

UFC heavyweight contender Curtis Blaydes has released a statement following his knockout win over Junior dos Santos in the main event of UFC Raleigh. Blaydes pummeled the former heavyweight champ JDS in the second round with a barrage of knees and punches along the fence before referee Dan Miragliotta was forced to step in and wave the contest off, giving Blaydes the TKO victory.

The UFC Raleigh weigh-ins took place Friday morning and all 24 fighters on the card made weight for this Saturday night’s event. In the main event, heavyweight Curtis Blaydes tipped the scales at 248lbs. His opponent, former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos, stepped onto the scales at 247lbs. Both men were well below the heavyweight non-title limit of 265lbs.

This report, which cites “multiple sources,” clarifies that contracts for the fight are not yet signed, but that both men have agreed to the bout. Junior dos Santos, who is the former UFC heavyweight champion, currently holds the No. 4 spot in the division’s rankings.

Last night, reports surfaced suggesting that a long-discussed heavyweight title fight between reigning champ Daniel Cormier and WWE star Brock Lesnar is off the table. The reason, these reports stated, is that the pro wrestling export Lesnar has decided he’s done with mixed martial arts. Heavyweight contender Curtis Blaydes isn’t happy to hear this. There hasn’t been a heavyweight title fight since November of 2018, when Cormier defended his title in a short-notice showdown with Derrick Lewis. Granted, that’s partly due to Cormier’s lingering injuries, but it’s also due the uncertainty surrounding this potential Lesnar vs. Cormier fight. Therein lies the issue for Curtis Blaydes.
