UFC president Dana White believes that a double weight cut “impacted” Tony Ferguson when he lost by knockout to Justin Gaethje at UFC 249. Ferguson was originally set to fight UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov back in April. However, the event was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, yet Ferguson decided to stay on schedule and make weight. The UFC was then able to hold an event in May in Jacksonville and Ferguson was matched up against Gaethje. Ferguson cut weight for a second time in a short period of time and then suffered the worst loss of his UFC career as he was beaten to the punch and TKOed in the fifth.

After Khabib Nurmagomedov retired following his win over Gaethje, many wondered how the UFC would book the lightweight division. If the belt was vacated many pointed to the Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier rematch as the logical option for the vacant title.

Abdelaziz is the manager of several notable fighters in the UFC including Gaethje, UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, UFC bantamweight Frankie Edgar, and many more. Dominance MMA is one of the top management groups in the game today as several of their fighters have become UFC champions, not to mention many of Abdelaziz’s fighters are generally among the most highly-compensated athletes in the promotion.

Recent UFC free-agent signing Michael Chandler is requesting a matchup against either Tony Ferguson or Justin Gaethje for his Octagon debut. Chandler was the backup for the UFC 254 main event between UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Gaethje, but he wasn’t needed as both men made weight and made it to the fight unscathed. A former three-time lightweight champion in Bellator, Chandler ended up getting introduced on the UFC 254 pay-per-view broadcast to UFC fans for the first time. But he went to Fight Island with the hopes of stepping into the cage.

Nurmagomedov tapped out Gaethje with a second-round triangle choke in the main event of Saturday’s UFC 254. Of course, what he did after the fight is what everyone is talking about this morning, as “The Eagle” announced his retirement from the sport immediately after in an announcement that came as a surprise to many fans and media.

After Nurmagomedov was forced to withdraw from his most recent scheduled contest with Ferguson at UFC 249, Tony wound up accepting a fight with Justin Gaethje for the promotions interim lightweight title.
